With Angel Fund Help, Injured
Stray Cat Gets Amputation
and Finds New Home
Jim Bell

T

anie Tran and her husband first encountered Sam, a street cat, during their evening
walks in the Torrance neighborhood where
they live. The feline was wary and held back
while his friend, Jax, was much less so.
" Jax would always greet my husband and me, " Tanie
wrote in her application for an Angel Fund grant, " while
Sam stayed behind and cautiously observed. Over time,
we earned Sam's trust, through patience and treats, but I
sensed that he had experienced trauma because he had
such deep sadness in his eyes. "
" I had to know more, " Tanie wrote. So she spoke to
neighbors in the area and put together a heart-breaking
story that described how Sam came to live on the streets
and how he was " a tiny hero who protected Jax and
other cats from coyotes. "
Shortly before Christmas a year ago, she wrote, his
family sold their condo in the area and moved away,
abandoning Sam and leaving him on the streets to fend
for himself.
" Having been an indoor cat, he was distraught and
frantically tried to get back inside. For months during
cold temperatures and pounding rain, neighbors saw him
crying at the front door, begging to come in. Despite his
desperate cries, the new homeowners relentlessly chased
him away, denying him the chance even to sit near the
front steps in a place that was once his safe haven. "
Eventually, Tanie wrote, Sam found a place under
some bushes where he could find some protection from
the cold nights.
In mid-December, a woman named Carmen who
fed abandoned cats in the area, called her, Tanie wrote,
and said that Sam was in trouble, crying and unable to
move his hind legs. " She didn't know what to do and
was going to call animal control. Knowing that he was
likely to be euthanized, I asked her not to do that and I
began to call and email everyone I could think of who
could help Sam.
" Every open animal hospital in my area informed me
that he should be euthanized because treatment would
be very expensive. And, they would say: " After all, he is a
street cat without a family.'
" That was not an acceptable response. Sam is a hero.
Neighbors have often shared stories of how he has protected other strays and neighborhood cats by chasing

away coyotes at night. He deserves a chance to find a
forever home. "
Tanie took him to an emergency hospital in Torrance.
The veterinarian there told her that he needed major
surgery or an amputation. Then she took Sam to Family
Pet Clinic of Redondo Beach, where she takes her four
cats for care. Doctors there recommended amputation
because of the severity of a fracture of Sam's thigh bone.
Because of pending medical treatments for her cats
and the bill she had already paid to the emergency hospital, Tanie needed help to pay Sam's bill. " His surgery is
just something I cannot afford at this time, " she wrote.
" I have never asked for help from others, " she wrote,
" but I am asking on behalf of Sam. Every life is precious and no innocent soul should suffer heartbreak and
abandonment during his time of need. His heroism and
unwavering loyalty to other cats deserves a happily-everafter home with a forever family. "
Tanie has a history of providing aid and finding homes
for stray animals (her four cats all were once homeless
and she recently found a home for a stray continued
