INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

Our Competitive Spirit Perseveres!
Elizabeth Goldstone

A

s I sit here, with Super Bowl LV just beginning, I was looking for some inspiration for
my monthly Pulse article. First, I was thinking
of how sad it is, not to be able to gather with others to watch, or at least, not taking a chance to do so,
but how the sports industry has persevered through
this pandemic. Of course, all major sports, baseball,
basketball and football had altered seasons, and more
importantly, it was done without or with little fan
participation.
As a veteran competitive athlete - I ran track in high
school and played competitive sand and indoor volleyball in
high school and college, and after - I have to believe it would
be hard to have your entire livelihood as a professional athlete,
affected in this way.
Sure, athletes do it for the rush and sense of accomplishment, but there is a bit of ego involved where they crave the
attention of the fans. Little by little, they have been allowing
more and more spectators into the stadiums and arenas, but it
will be awhile before those stadiums will be filled again. But
it is our competitive spirit which has overcome the COVID
environment and the underlying sense of " nothing is as usual. "
Not only do we see this in sports, but in other professions
as well. Our entertainment industry, which was on hold in
the beginning, was chomping at the bit to get back out there.
Not only were we craving new entertainment, but of course
as an actor, if that was your profession, you wanted to get back
to work as soon as you could. Again, also the competitive
spirit, as this is another industry that is also judged and lauded
for its performances. Both sports and entertainment had to
follow serious guidelines and quarantining to get them going
again, but it has seemed to work for the most part, with both
trying to get back on schedule. I am sure it will be a while,
though, before people are actually filling theater seats. Thank
goodness for streaming and cable shows! They have been a
lifesaver for those who have been sequestered in their homes.
Even in our industry, the competitive spirit is still intact.
All of us vendors have been itching to get the green light to
re-enter the field. Like I mentioned in my last article, it has
been a stop and go situation for the last 11 months, but we
all have been doing whatever it takes to stay relevant, even
though we are stuck in our homes. You as the veterinary
professionals know this, as I am sure your email inboxes have
been overrun with communications from everyone vendor
that you work with every day. When you think about all of
the different products and apparatuses needed to operate an
animal hospital, I can just imagine how vet/owners have been
bombarded during this time.

Without modern technology, I don't know what we would
have done. Between email, text, phone and Zoom, we were
able to do our jobs, but it was harder to get the feedback.
As salespeople, we were used to having more of a pulse on
what was happening with our clients, but with doors closed
to us, it was harder to know what was transpiring. But with
our competitive spirit, we had to come up with more creative
ways to reach clinics - lunches, treats, value-adds, etc. Yes, we
do those things normally, but with staff stress levels at record
highs, we were happy to try and lighten the mood for these
essential workers with more of the same.
And to be honest, you as vet professionals, also maintained
your competitive spirit. Even though the pandemic changed
things drastically for everyone, the industry is competitive,
and you had to find new ways to maintain and grow your
business, with what I might say, a very stressed out client base.
You had to come up with new ways to operate, keep your
clients happy, and be profitable. You may not have thought
of it that way, but really everyone who is in business has had
to maintain their competitive spirit, just to keep motivated
and to stay in business. I know that there are underlying circumstances beyond one's control, that made it impossible
for some to stay above water, but I would say, everyone has
fought to keep their jobs and businesses alive.
I guess you could call it going into survival mode, but I
like to put a more positive spin on it and call it one's competitive spirit instead. I know I have witnessed this in all lines
of work, and in all kinds of people during this pandemic. We
hear " we're gonna beat this thing " every day. That in itself is
a competitive statement. P
