PULSE PERSPECTIVE

RMCNV@YAHOO.COM

ALWAYS BE BATMAN

W

hen people get to see me, they almost invariably ask " Are you a Batman fan? " I think it's because
I always have some Batman themed object/clothing on me. Always. At my last count, I have at
least 15 Batman shirts, 5 jackets, 5 pairs of socks, 3 pajamas, a onesie, 8 mugs, 1 dinnerware set, 5
scrub shirts, 2 surgical caps, 5 face masks, etc.You get the idea. Don't ask me how many toys, Lego sets, action
figures and collectible statues are stashed away in the garage. I desperately want to take over one of the bedrooms in the house to convert into a display center for my collection. Unfortunately, my wife is against the
idea. So there they will remain until I win the lotto.
When did this all start?
I just recently saw a picture posted
by my sister on my birthday last year.
She managed to dig up a very old,
sepia colored photograph of her and
myself sitting on top of our old slide
and swing set in the garden. She was
wearing a dress and I was wearing a
Batman costume. And as far as I can
figure, the photograph was taken in
1970. I was only 5 years old back then.
Apparently, Batman has been in my
system since early childhood.

Why do I like Batman?
I liked to draw when I was in grade
school. When I was in Third Grade, my
best friend at that time and myself created a comic book by inventing our
own superhero team. We imagined the
storyline, drew the panels and characters, colored them individually, and
filled in the dialogue. It was at that time that I discovered to
my dismay, that I could not draw faces. Superheroes in masks
were easy! And since the well-known heroes at that time were
Batman and Superman, choosing who to draw more frequently was a no-brainer. The more I drew him, the more I
got to like him. The TV shows starring Adam West and Burt
Ward were always something to look forward to every week.
I tried to read every comic I could find. My elder brother and
I would make our own Batarangs (Batman-themed boomerangs, for those not in the know) from pasted together cardboard cutouts tied on the end with a string. Blankets would
serve as capes during those imagination filled play times.

What does Batman have to do with veterinary
medicine?
Batman is billed as the World's Greatest Detective. He
finds clues, analyzes them, and comes up with the answer. I
find that to be exactly what we veterinarians do. Since our
patients cannot talk, we have to ask the " witnesses " /pet parents what they have seen and heard. We interview/interrogate
them repeatedly, looking for inconsistencies in their statements to try and come up with a believable and plausible
timeline of events leading to the present problem. We use our

4

well-developed physical examination
skills to examine the pet closely looking for clues that may point in the
right direction of inquiry. We perform
different tests in an attempt to narrow down the choices to the correct
disease before we do any treatment.
Then we compile and put all that data
together to come up with a diagnosis
and treatment plan. After all that hard
work, Batman's reward is to see justice done. Ours is to see a happy and
healthy pet.
Another quality of Batman that
we can make use of is his ability to
always think ahead and be prepared.
In the DC animated movie Doom,
he shows how he does it. The premise
of the movie starts with a supervillain
managing to infiltrate the Batcave and
steal some of his files. Apparently, Batman had a dossier on each and every
Justice League member and had devised a plan to take each
of them down based on their weaknesses, should they ever
turn evil. Even for Superman. As the story developed, all the
members were incapacitated thanks to Batman's files. But in
the end, Batman still managed to think of a way to foil the
League of Doom's plans and rescue everyone. The takeaway
message for me here is that one should always have a backup
plan in case Plan A does not work. When treating a pet, the
owner may not be willing or just unable to afford the recommended treatment. I believe we should always have other
options to offer that may allow the same desired result. When
doing surgery, I try to think and anticipate whatever may go
wrong and prepare for it accordingly. As a former Boy Scout,
the motto " Be prepared " has been very useful.
Sad to say, just like any ordinary human, Batman also has
his faults. But that's a story for another day. So, just like my
coffee mug proudly declares: " Always be yourself, unless

you can be Batman, then always be BATMAN. "
