THE RVT
Techs Teaching Tomorrow's Vets
Joseph G. Herman, BS, RVT
I
t's rather ironic to know that many RVTs are being
underutilized by veterinarians who, while studying to
be a veterinarian, were taught by RVTs.
While the depth of RVT instruction varies from one university
to the next, RVTs employed by schools of veterinary medicine are
highly regarded and integral to the students' education. " Any vet
tech working at a university is going to have some kind of teaching
role, " explained Darci L. Palmer, BS, LVT, VTS (Anesthesia &
Analgesia). " And when it comes to patient care in particular, the
technicians are the driving force upon which the students rely. "
Palmer currently works at the Tuskegee University College of
Veterinary Medicine, and has worked at the Washington State University
and Auburn University Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, all
in a clinical anesthesia capacity. At Tuskegee, however-where she
has taught since 2020-Palmer has secured a lecture component
to her position, which is a " rare " accomplishment for a technician,
versus strictly teaching on the floor.
A Past-President of the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia
& Analgesia, Palmer and her veterinarian husband also spent
one year at Oregon State University, " But I didn't like the gloomy
weather, " said Palmer, moving back to Alabama at the first chance.
When the Pupil Becomes the Master
Whether in a veterinary technology program or during on-thejob
training, we all have been taught by veterinarians at one point
or another. And rightly so, as they are, for the most part, far more
knowledgeable of medical concepts than are the RVTs. Teaching,
however, is like anything else... If you do something long enough
and become good enough, you can go on to teach others. The
great unknown is whether the respect you deserve for doing so is
apparent or elusive.
" I have always felt needed and wanted by the students, " said
Palmer. " I've found that the supporting role a technician plays
is crucial to their education. And the good students learn very
quickly to lean on their technicians for assistance. "
But what about the few outliers who don't seek or respect
the technician's advice? Well, as I once heard a wise person say,
" Whenever ignorance and arrogance come together, it's never a
good combination. "
" Every once in a while, you come across students who think
they know it all, or that they don't need to know the basics, " said
Palmer. " But when performing anesthesia, they quickly learn how
important it is to have the technician on their side, especially when
things don't go as planned, when they find themselves falling and
in need of support.
" Now, I don't mean that to sound malicious, not by any means, "
added Palmer. " It's just that if a student has the attitude that they're
there to learn-and they're pleasant-then they're going to have the
support of the technicians to help them along. They're going to rely on
whoever can provide them with the information they need to learn. "
22
When Learning is a Two-Way Street
" I love to learn, " said Palmer. " And I learn best by being able to
teach what I know to somebody else. So if I don't know a topic
well enough to teach it, then in my mind I don't know it well
enough at all, " at which point she retreats back to her textbooks
" to fill in the blanks. "
Palmer also looks forward to answering in-depth questions from
the vet med students, with the toughest questions yielding the
greatest rewards. She puts particular stock in those students who
seek further explanation or are not afraid to say, " What you're saying
doesn't make any sense. " And when that happens, said Palmer,
" it tells me that I need to either change the way I'm saying things,
or go back to the books to make sure that I'm actually saying it
correctly. " In that way, added Palmer, " I learn just as much from
the students as they potentially learn from me. "
Palmer's ultimate reward is when her students go out and put
their newfound knowledge of anesthesia into practice, and then
report back with the positive outcomes. Using the act of mask
induction as an example-a common technique, but not necessarily
the best-Palmer walks her students through better ways
to induce and provides supporting explanation. " And then the
students go out on their externships, " said Palmer, " armed with
enough information to change the mind of their preceptor, or
even the veterinarian they've worked with all through college.
And then they come back and tell me how much better the anesthesia
was and how pleased the vet was, because everything went
so much smoother. "
Never Looking Back
Once Palmer made the decision early in her career to pursue the
Veterinary Technician Specialist certification, she's " never looked
back, " and believes that becoming a VTS was " for a purpose, " as it
helped satisfy her long-held desire to teach. She's quick to point out,
however, that attaining her VTS was actually just the beginning.
" Staying engaged is a requirement of the specialist, " said Palmer,
" because at the end of the day, the credentials don't mean anything
if you can't back up what you're saying. And I stand firmly behind
that, " added Palmer, " because if you can't describe or define the
'Why' behind the 'What,' then you need to go back and learn
even more. And that's true for any specialist, at any level. There's
always something new to learn. " P
Palmer also looks forward to
answering in-depth questions from
the vet med students, with the
toughest questions yielding the
greatest rewards.
