The Pros and Cons of
Back to Almost-Normal
Elizabeth Goldstone
I
t seems like no matter how hard I try to write
about something other than Covid related
topics, I keep coming back to it every month
when I go to write this column.
I, like many of you, am feeling all kinds of relief about
being out in public, either without a mask or with a
mask. While most places I go tell me I don't have to wear
a mask if I am vaccinated, I still do a lot of the time, as
I still don't want to get sick with anything. We all fail to
forget that there are many other germs just waiting to
get us, out there. So, while some people feel completely
liberated, I don't as much as I want to, that being the first
" con " about being back to semi-normal.
I am also excited about being out in my car more,
which really is my office, when not in my home office.
It feels good having more people to see, more places to
go, and while some days I don't go anywhere, it is still
getting busier. But, Have you seen the traffic out there?
Boy, were we spoiled this
last year, with virtually no
one on the road! Now, while the roads and freeways
are crowded, people are acting and driving crazier than
I have ever seen! It's like people forgot how to drive,
or just are so excited about being out, that they forget
everything about following the rules of the road. Don't
even get me started on all the freeway shootings. Luckily,
I take side streets mostly everywhere in Orange County
if I really needed to stay away from the crazies.
Going out to dinners have been the biggest highlight
for me. Although I ordered in quite a bit from some of
these restaurants during the pandemic, it's not the same
as socializing with your friends, family or clients. It is so
nice to see people out enjoying themselves, and contributing
to the economy. I know a lot of businesses struggled,
and it feels good to be part of the revival. The only
real " con " with this, and it is totally understandable, is
that food costs have doubled, I realize everyone is trying
to make up for time and business lost, and this is the case
for most everything now.
Which brings me to the next luxury - nails, toes and
hair! Although, I was able to sneak in a few appointments
in the winter months, it was great to be able to safely and
securely go get a mani-pedi, and to get my hair done.
I know people who went the full year and a half, not
doing any of these, and I guess I don't have their willpower!
It was so great also, when I was out in the desert,
to get a massage and enjoy the spa. Every establishment I
have visited has been extra clean and health conscious, so
that was reassuring. And of course, the " con " would again
be that prices have doubled. I guess the " pro " would be

that during the pandemic, there wasn't as much spending
happening, so now we have a little bit of savings to
reboot the economy.
The last issue that has a good and bad side is with
our pets. This is a big topic right now, as we have seen
how many new pets were adopted or purchased during
the pandemic, which was evident in how busy clinics
were. Not only were there new pets, but we spent
so much quality time with our existing furbabies, that
the thought of leaving them has a lot of people worried.
Everyone I have spoken to is afraid of the separation
anxiety that is going to happen, once everyone goes
back to work. I, unfortunately deal with this every day,
as I can't even go out my front door without my dog
panicking. She is a big nervous Nelly! I am fortunate to
have my same pet sitter as I had before the pandemic,
but I still worry about being away from her for long
periods of time. There is also the fear that people who
got pets will not keep them, when they realize it is more
of a responsibility than they expected. They may not be
prepared or have arrangements for when they go back
to work. I am really hoping this does not happen, and
everyone readjusts, as we don't want a huge onslaught of
unwanted animals.
Overall, I think everything is going in a positive direction,
and there will always be down sides to all aspects
of our society returning to normal. So far, it has been a
smooth transition, and I hope it continues in this manner
for all. P
