to medical school or to veterinary school
but I haven't decided yet.
" This overwork and reflection and our
baby coming have made me realize that
work has been my passion. My story is a
cautionary tale of what not to do. I want to
turn it around and do what I should have,
which is to go back to school and become
a vet - because I love to work with animals
- or perhaps become a practice owner. Buying
a practice might be a way to stay in the
field. I'm not sure right now what I will do. "
Max is proud of his practice and what he
has accomplished there. He considers Sorin
Popescu, husband of Dr. Nicoleta Popescu,
the practice owner, to be his mentor.
He became an RVT after graduating
from Long Beach State in 2006. He joined
the Popescus after they purchased the practice
in 2011 and was certified as a practice
manager in 2015.
He said the staff at Nordhoff works four
10-hour shifts each week. " I think there
are a lot of problems in our industry with
work-life balance, " he said. He credits Sorin
Popescu with wanting to take care of the
staff and keep employees healthy. " He taught
me that we have to take care of the people
Elaine Myers has been working at
the Orange County Emergency Pet
Clinics for more than 25 years, first
as an emergency vet tech and then
as a manager.
" I worked on the floor for about a decade, "
she said. " Then I slowly started taking on
administrative duties. I moved out of state to
finish my education when the internet was
young and those administrative duties could
be done remotely. I was able to handle billing
and talking to clients and I did the company
newsletter and training manuals. " She came
back to Southern California every summer
and worked in the practice.
" I maintained contact with the company
while I finished my degree. It was very
progressive for the time. I knew the ins and
outs, so my boss could call and say I need
to write a protocol for something and I
knew it because I had worked the floor for
10 years so that was pretty easy. "
As she was finishing her degree at the
University of Missouri, her boss, then the
hospital administrator, decided to retire. He
recommended her to the hospital board of
directors. She initially worked as practice
manager and has been hospital administrator
for six years.
" Preventing and solving problems are
the biggest part of my job. Pretty much I'm
100 percent available, " she said. During the

who come in the front door - our clients -
and the people who come in the back door
so they can take care of the pets. "
He has called Jessica Speas, practice
manager at Crescenta-Canada Pet Hospital,
when he has needed help with human
resources questions. He credits her with
steering him to the CVPM program by
giving him a package of material when he
visited her practice - a packet he did not
look at for some months. When he did read
it, he said, " I realized I was missing out on
a goldmine. " Jessica also helped him find a
mentorship program. And she introduced
him to an online program called Forum
that has helped him find answers to problems
he has encountered.
Max is working to start a veterinary
group he originally called the Independent
Practice Managers Alliance. He now wants
the group to be more inclusive. " I want to
create something that welcomes everyone, "
he said, " kennel workers, doctors - all levels
in the profession. It's not a practice managers
group anymore. "
Max's spouse, Tracey, has a veterinary
degree from Mexico and plans to eventually
qualify to practice in the United States.
covid pandemic, she added medical grade
air filters to exam rooms and sneeze guards
at the front counter, plus clear dividers
(like shower curtains) that can be used, if
needed. Those additions have helped make
the practice safer for employees and will
remain in the two clinic locations, she said.
There are always employees who simply
want to punch the clock and go home.
" That element is always there and that's
OK. Not everybody is the same. You can't
have a roomful of leaders. "
" There are lots of really good people in my

them succeed in another hospital, " she said.
She sat down one of her most promising
techs, she said, and asked her which way
she wanted her career to go. " She enjoyed
working with the people and the staff.
Now she's in management. We worked
together for a while and then a job opportunity
came open. I recommended her for
it and now she's practice manager at Garden
Grove Dog and Cat. If people are
maxed out at our practice, I don't have any
problem helping them take that next step,
even if it's not in our company. "
She attends both Orange County managers
groups and all her close colleagues
are members, too, she said.
The emergency clinic has about 75 staff
members and 12 veterinarians.
