Family's Career Choice

The Angel Fund:
So far, our cooperative venture with
the Animal Health Foundation has
contributed almost $120,000 to truly
needy pet owners throughout Los
Angeles and Orange counties. The
cases have ranged from major medical
conditions to challenging surgical
procedures. The common thread is
pet owners with real financial need
being helped to provide the care their
pets need.

is no cost to sign up. Thus,
there is nothing to lose and everything

AHF Boydston Senior Grants:
From the generous bequest of Ms.
Mary Edna Boydston, the program
helps elderly or retired residents in
Los Angeles or Orange counties with
veterinary bills. Qualifying individuals
may receive annual awards of up
to $500.
Applicants must be 65 years or older
and must demonstrate financial need.

of Health Sciences has grown up with and among
accountants and she emphatically wanted a change of scenery
when she chose her career.
" Both of my parents are accountants, " Elizabeth Tuff said.
" I grew up with a lot of their friends and a lot of them are
accountants and a lot of their children are accountants, too.
And that was something I wanted to stay far away from. "
Her parents, she said, like accounting and it has been a good career for them.
She chose veterinary medicine after considering medical school and law
school. During her undergraduate years at UC San Diego, she decided that a
veterinary career " was what I wanted to do. "
Today she is preparing for her second year at the Western School of Veterinary
Medicine. Because of the coronavirus pandemic and her new role as the
SCVMA campus rep, it will be a different kind of year.
Elizabeth expects that much of the class work will be online. " A lot of the
hands-on learning has been pushed back. "
And one of her duties - coordinating speeches to students by SCVMA members,
often Dr. Peter Weinstein, the executive director - will be online, unlike
in previous years. " That could be a little challenging, " she said. Perhaps some
of those events later in the year will be in person, she said. But that is likely to
depend on the pandemic.
She will also provide communications between the SCVMA and Western students
about scholarship opportunities and internships
Elizabeth grew up in Redlands. She has lived in Southern California all her
life and expects to stay here when she starts her career as a veterinarian. She
toured the Western veterinary school while at UCSD and chose it over the
veterinary school at Iowa State University.
Western was an easy choice for her. Not only was it in Southern California
but " I I wouldn't have wanted to be in Iowa in the winter. "
Elizabeth majored in biology at UCSD. She thinks she will want to practice
small animal medicine and hopes to own her own practice some day. " But, "
she said, " I don't want to limit myself. I'm open to doing large animal as well
and I'm open to other things. "
She feels fortunate to be " part of a great family. I'm really lucky that I have a
very supportive family, especially at this time, " she said.
The major event of her summer was a seven-day backpacking trip to Yellowstone
National Park in July.
She is delighted to be SCVMA's campus representative. " I really like being
involved at Western. The student rep position is another way to get involved.
I really like the school and the program and I really like giving back. it's nice
to be part of this. "
