because of their nails.
Mobile Pet Nail Trim OC was born.
Today, Junyszek will come to your home
with a handheld cart stocked with trimmers,
Dremel tools, files and treats-dried
beef liver for dogs and Temptations for cats.
She started her business 4½ years ago,
never expecting it take off as it has.
" I get new clients all the time, " she said.
" Now I pretty much work seven days a
week, though not usually eight-hour days.
People find me online or through word of
mouth, and appreciate my experience as a
veterinary technician.
" I get to meet a lot of neat people who
love their animals, including some shut-ins
and some in assisted living centers. "
Junyszek began by posting on her neighborhood's
Nextdoor app, citing her 30
years' experience as a technician. Locals
responded. Someone asked if she had a
Yelp! page, so she made one, and that client
gave her her first review. Now she's on
Facebook as well.
She charges $30 for a trim. If a client
lives more than 7 miles from her Mission
Viejo home, she charges an extra
$5. For an additional fee, she cleans ears
and expresses anal glands. She offers

Mary Ellen Goldberg, LVT, CVT, VTS
Mary Ellen Goldberg is retired now from some of the roles that are
reflected in her certifications.
She has stopped working as a Veterinary
Technician Specialist in lab animal
medicine (research anesthesia) and physical
rehabilitation, and as a surgical research
anesthetist. But she is still using her VTS
in anesthesia and analgesia, is a veterinary
medical technologist, certified rehabilitation
veterinary nurse and certified veterinary
pain practitioner.
When she went to school, the title was
animal health technician or animal health
technologist.
" The adjective 'veterinary' referred
exclusively to veterinarians until 1989,
when the term 'veterinary technician' was
formally approved by the House of Delegates
of the American Veterinary Medical
Association, " Goldberg said.
" I decided to go to a formalized program
because my mother was a human
nurse and taught nursing for over 31 years.
She told me that there was no way I would
see the variety of cases in a traditional practice
that one would see in a veterinary
medical college. Specialty practices are the
norm now, but back in the 1970s, this was
not the case.
" I have always preferred animals to people.
I was an only child and animals were
my best friends. "
Her first job was at a small animal and
equine practice in Richmond, Virginia.
" I thought I wanted to work with horses
exclusively, and I stayed at this position for
nine months. I was working 65-70 hours
a week. I came down with hepatitis and
mononucleosis because of overwork, no

rest, and dirty syringes that I had to clean
to be resterilized.
" One week after being out for six weeks,
I came down with German measles. My
immune system was completely compromised.
It was a very different world from today.
" I did every job in the hospital, including
what I had gone to school to learn. I
was the maid, cage cleaner, sometimes
receptionist, lab technician, anesthetist,
scrub technician, sterile processing technician-all
for $401.61 a month.
" I had to live with my parents because I
could not afford to live on my own. "
She applied with a nearby pharmaceutical
company, A.H. Robins Co., which
made human drugs but had a veterinary
division. She interviewed and was offered a
position working in veterinary research on
a chicken coccidiostat drug.
" Yes, it was chickens, " she said. " Yes, it was
research. But it was easily double the salary
I had made, all weekends off, holidays off
and vacation, which I had no idea you could
receive, plus sick days. In short, it was a company
position that no small or large animal
veterinary hospital could offer. "
After raising three sons, she went back to
work in a mixed animal practice.
" Again, long hours and poor pay, " she
says. She stayed there eight years.
She applied at Virginia Commonwealth
University Medical College of Virginia and
was offered a job in their Division of Animal
Resources.
" It was an eight-hour day, lunch break,
leaving on time, no weekends, holidays and
paid sick leave. For the first time since I
had children, I could take them to the doctor
or stay home with them when they
were ill and not feel guilty. "
" I had never worked with nonhuman
primates, " she said. " In lab animal medicine,
these patients are very valuable under
FDA/USDA/AALAC regulations. If there
was an emergency, I was called in to evaluate
these patients. I worked extremely
closely with the animal care staff. Never in
my life had I ever had another person to
assist me in duties. "
Today, she has cut way back on work.
" I prefer to be a grandma and do my basic
jobs for our industry. "
She teaches pain management and surgical
nursing for VetMedTeam Inc. and pain
management and basic physical rehabilitation
courses for the Veterinary Support

discounts for three services and more
than three pets.
She works with dogs, cats, rabbits and
guinea pigs, and if a client knows how to
hold a bird, she clips their nails, too. In a
previous incarnation, she worked at an
exotics clinic.
Her clients appreciate not having to take
their pets to the vet, she said.
" This in-home service reduces a lot of
stress, for both the animal and the client. "
