Fall Celebrations

I
realize that the Guns 'n Roses lead singer is talking
about unrequited love in the song " Cold November
Rain. " It is this first sentence that I am especially
taken by. Nothing lasts forever. Boy isn't this the
truth? Nothing lasts forever does hold a very tangible
truth as I celebrated my 60th birthday at the
end of October.
Six decades on this earth can feel a bit overwhelming but
it does cause me to reflect on my life. Just as I reflect on this
past summer and the many changes that have occurred, I realize
life feels like it is speeding up. The change occurs at an
accelerated pace. And as this crazy life has it, most change is
unplanned. There have been staffing changes at my clinic. I
have bought and remodeled a home in my dream location. I
had the passing of one pet and the addition of another.
I can reflect on over three decades as a professional in veterinary
medicine and I have learned the change happens, to
quote Hemingway, " gradually then suddenly " . I can remember
meeting with the previous owner of my clinic to discuss
a purchase. We had met several times and I presumed
we were going to discuss ownership transition when suddenly
he dropped the keys in my hand and said, " your first
appointment is in the exam room, " With a hand shake deal I
went from a relief vet to a business owner and employer. Did
I mention I was in a t-shirt, shorts and sneakers? Yikes!
Three days after my birthday marks being married for 22
years. I remember telling Cory that I wanted my anniversary
close to my birthday and my favorite holiday Halloween so
that the best days of fall were all close together. This kind of
life planning might be best appreciated by my type A friends
but then everything is on a schedule. I was able to celebrate
my birthday with a ladies in pink brunch at one of my favorite
restaurants Arc Butcher and Baker. I celebrated Halloween
by dressing up and going to a midnight showing of the
Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Frida Theater in Santa Ana
and finally celebrated my anniversary by watching my beloved
MSU Spartans get pummeled by the Michigan Wolverines with
my hubby and closest Spartan friends. We'll get them next year!
So, as we welcome the Fall season, I have come full circle.
Nothing lasts forever are true but as I look around and take
inventory of my life and career the more things change the
more they stay the same! I suggest as we get together with
family and friends this Thanksgiving, we take a moment for
ourselves, take inventory of our lives and plan for the change
we would like for our own lives.
