movement judged sufficient. And because so many people in
the humane movement have been white and relatively affluent,
that judgment came without understanding many of the
obstacles these pet owners faced.
" So Lori was part of that movement but she offered a counter-narrative
because people have always mattered to her. "
Carol's book describes how the SCVMA partnered with
Lori and DDR:
" In 2015, [Lori] met Dr. Peter Weinstein, then executive
director of the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association,
whose board was eager to do work in underserved
parts of the city. Their partnership provided a regular supply
of medical staff, some of whom turned out monthly for
Downtown Dog Rescue [events] . . . . The vets, dubious at
first, came to love the work, Dr. Weinstein told me. For once,
they could do what they'd trained for without having 'the
money talk' with an owner. Lori changed the scene for poor
and homeless pet owners, " he said. " And changed the mindset
of a lot of veterinarians. " Many SCVMA veterinarians and
staff members still participate.
Lori is general manager of Modernica, a furniture company
originally based in downtown LA, which has since moved to Vernon.
She has worked there 28 years. She also oversees DDR's
kennel and Clancy's Closet, a pet-themed thrift store, both in
South Gate, and regular large-scale community health clinics.
Carol said that writing the book had been difficult. " Mostly
what was hard was finding my way into it. It didn't really jell
for me, ironically, until George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis.
Then, suddenly, the country was talking about social
justice. And it was clear that what Lori was doing was a kind
of social justice. And that was a way to frame the story. "
She is the author of three other books and has written
for The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Washington
Post, as well as numerous magazines. She is married to
sociologist and author James William Gibson. They have a
daughter, Melissa Gibson.
The couple live in West Los Angeles. They have an aging
rescue dog that they originally agreed to foster but then, Carol
said, " we fell in love. Twelve years later she is still with us. " P
