Rescued by RELI: How Intentional Mentorship
Provided a Second Chance Career

Throughout my life, mentorship has held an ever present and impactful purpose. From my mother's care
packaged teachings during my days of adolescence through adulthood to those other angels on earth from
church, the community, and from my school systems that stepped up and stepped in with an outreach of care
and life advice.
After being laid off from my first position in collegiate sports post completion of my graduate school career
in 2008 to securing then second guessing a career change to student affairs, life was quite the rollercoaster.
Due to experiencing some complexities, I realized I was sinking into the logic that there was not a place for
me in the student affairs field. Well, that was until I heard about the Southeastern Association of Housing
Officers' (SEAHO) Regional Entry Level Institute (RELI). I thought it to be a longshot of even getting selected
but figured it was worth the try. Thankfully, I was blessed to be selected to be a part of the 32 participants to
comprise the 2009 RELI cohort.
My RELI experience was nothing short of phenomenal! It not only recharged me, it replaced my attitude and
refueled my struggling feelings of hope that I had a place in this field. One of the most impactful aspects of the
