Ask the Treasurer
Welcome to what I hope will be an on-going column written by the SEAHO
Treasurer that will engage and educate the SEAHO membership about its money.
While I have been an active member of SEAHO for 20+ years, it was not until
I was selected to be the conference treasurer for the 2013 SEAHO Regional
Conference that I become acutely aware of SEAHO finances. In 2013 I was
elected SEAHO Treasurer and in 2016 I was re-elected. In my time as Treasurer,
I have worked to make the Treasurer's Report fun and memorable, but it is very
difficult to explain the complexities of SEAHO's finances in a 5-10 minute report
once a year. I see your eyes glaze over as I refer to spreadsheet after spreadsheet.
It took me five years to have the epiphany to use the SEAHO Report as a way to
engage membership and answer questions that might be out there about SEAHO
finances and what exactly the SEAHO Treasurer does. Perhaps I have done such a good job that you have no
questions, but I doubt it. Surely someone has a question or two. If you have questions, I invite you to send
them to treasurer@seaho.org. Maybe your question and the answer will appear in the next issue. If there are no
questions, then I will explore some aspect of SEAHO financial history, present, or potential future.
In this piece I will just provide an introduction to the Treasurer role and the SEAHO budget.
The SEAHO Constitution defines the treasurer's job and there are not a lot of surprises: act as the custodian of
the association funds and disbursements, maintain careful and sufficient records to account for said funds, and
sign all official SEAHO contracts for the Association. Last but not least - "other duties as assigned".
The SEAHO Constitution also speaks to Revenue and Expenditures. Association funds shall be maintained
in a manner that will serve to protect and preserve the integrity and financial stability of the Association and
shall be used only in cases where expenditures clearly implement the general objective, mission, and purpose
of the Association. Association funds shall be maintained in an Administrative Fund - the Operating Account
and the Conference Account, the Reserve Fund, and the Endowment Account. Want to know more about those
accounts? Still wondering who this mystical steed Two-Step is and his new partner Legacy?
Tune in to the next issue of the SEAHO Report for Ask the Treasurer!
