hall student leaders to honorary organizations to general student organizations, this book has something for any
situation to help student-leaders apply their training to specific examples and prepare them to effectively manage
their position or organization.
Motivating the Middle: Fighting Apathy in College Student Organizations (T.J. Sullivan)
Whether is with recruiting students for an organization or working with an organization's current members, apathy is a constant struggle with today's students and their organizations. This book recognizes that students come
into an organization with an expected level of engagement, and provides a guide for how student-leaders can
recognize that idea, motivate members to reach that ideal level of engagement, and avoid attitudes that may drag
the organization down, such as low morale, burnout, and apathy. For anyone looking for ways to keep a student
organization's engine running, even during challenging times, this is an excellent resource.
5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace (Gary Chapman)
Especially in volunteer positions, the idea that individuals feel appreciated for their work can have a significant
influence on the time and energy they put into their position. This book provides readers with a guide to how
individuals respond to different forms of appreciation, and how to identify effective forms of appreciation within
an organization. Whether you are an Advisor looking to demonstrate your appreciation for your student's efforts
or training your honorary/recognition organization on how to make sure their recognition efforts are appreciated by recipients, this book is a great guide to understanding appreciation beyond recognition.

Developing a Holistic RA Training and Development Model
By Sara Simms, University of North Carolina at Greensboro

Overview
The Resident Advisor (RA) role
is a unique leadership position
that enables students to serve as
peer-mentors, counselors, policy
enforcers, mediators, event
planners, crisis managers, and so
much more. While in this role,
the wealth of transferable skills
that are developed for future
career opportunities are vast,
and enables RAs to approach
future job roles with a sense of
confidence.
While serving as the RA Training and Development Chair for the Office and Housing and Residence Life (HRL) during the 2017-2018 academic year, I saw a unique opportunity to develop a holistic training and development model. Traditionally,
our department has hosted RA training and continuing development sessions as separate entities. I wanted to
provide an avenue for the RAs to grow professionally within their role, while also integrating self-exploration to
learn about themselves, open their mind to different areas of leadership, and translate their RA experience for future career endeavors. I have provided additional details to highlight the purpose of each focal area for the model
and how it was incorporated during the year.
