SEAHO Report - Spring 2018 - 24

through fall training, it was important for the RAs to continue thinking critically about their impact as a leader
on campus.
During the fall semester, the first year RAs were required to participate in the first level of a leadership challenge
program facilitated by OLSL to critically think about their leadership philosophy, and how to determine their
personal style. For a lot of our students, they become RAs during their sophomore year so this program allows
them to engage in intentional self-reflection to determine how they could best serve as a leader in the role.
For the returning RAs who had already completed the leadership challenge program, I had the idea of developing a model that focused on their development as leaders in the areas of wellness, local involvement in Greensboro through political and community service, and social justice. This model was based on the Social Change
theory which highlights how effective leaders must develop their own leadership qualities to learn how to work
collaboratively with others to create positive social change. RAs attended these sessions once a month from September through December, and the content of each session is outlined below:
* Leading Well - This session focused on energy management and how the RAs should be mindful of how
to preserve and recharge their energy within the role. Taking care of oneself when in a helping profession is paramount, and this session encouraged them to think about their personal wellness and selfcare.
* Leading Locally - Two-part session designed to educate RAs on how they could get involved with local
politics and government, and how to support the city of Greensboro through participating in service.
Recognizing the RAs are tasked with building community within their residence hall, we also wanted to
support their efforts to get students connected to the city of Greensboro through civic engagement.
* Leading Justly - This session allowed the RAs to examine their unconscious bias as it relates to other
cultures and steps they could take to improve their intercultural competence. RA's play a big role in
creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for the students they serve. Personal reflection is
the foundation for social justice education, and bringing attention to implicit biases will enable the RA's
to better support their students.
Career Development
As I stated earlier, the RA position is a great role to develop many transferable skills that are highly valued in
a plethora of different jobs. My hope for the RAs was to learn how their role as a student leader could serve as
a stepping stone for their future jobs and careers. I served as a Career Peer Advisor as a graduate student and I
was surprised by the number of students that underutilize the Career Services Office. The variety of resources
they provide to assist students with their career development and exploration are extremely beneficial. Through
a collaboration with the Career Services Center, we designed four sessions tailored to the RA experience to offer
support and guidance as they embark on their career development journey. The sessions were attended once a
month during the spring semester and are outlined below:
* Where Do I Start? - An overview of services provided by the Career Services Center, an exploration of
self to determine work values, and relating the RA role to the NACE Career Readiness Competencies
* Creating Your Brand & Showcasing your Resident Advisor Skills - An overview of the difference between
a résumé and curriculum vitae, how to translate your RA experience to create your professional brand,
and how to draft a cover letter
* Interviewing Skills - An overview of the different types of interview questions, and strategies to answer
questions effectively by showcasing their RA experience
* Online Presence & What's Next? - An overview of how a social media presence can impact a job search,
and steps to take as the RAs start looking for jobs (i.e. researching the cost of living, reviewing benefits
