Another goal for this experience was to be accessible to everyone. We did not want cost to be a limiting factor
in who was able to participate in this trip. We have been fortunate to have the means to cover the cost of this
experience entirely for our students. They pay $150 to reserve their space. Literally, everything else (minus any
souvenirs the students want to take home) is covered by the department; a truly rare gift that we fully appreciate.
This has meant that students who would otherwise have never had the opportunity to go on this type of trip are
able to be included. At universities that do not have those resources, creative fundraising initiatives (spaghetti
dinners, silent auctions, educational grants, community donations, etc.) have been successful at offsetting the
financial cost so that it is not shouldered by the students.
Our UM students commit to not only traveling with the group during Spring Break but also six pre-trip
meetings, a pre-trip collaboration with Habitat for Humanity in Oxford or a surrounding community, as well as
two post-trip meetings, and a post-trip collaboration with a north Mississippi non-profit. It was important that
while the trip took the students to a new state and region of the country, we also provided the opportunity to
give back to our own local community. Because we knew this was an experience we could only provide for a
select number of students, we added an application process. We asked students to answer questions about why
they wanted to go on the trip, what they would bring to the team, and what their experience has been (if any)
with community service and collaborating with non-profit organizations. The first year, we had around 150
applications. For 10 spots.

Our travel team the first year was great. They knew
they were the test group, and they set the bar high. They
completely bought into the experience and worked hard
to make it work. As with any first try, there were speed
bumps and hurdles but we stuck together and got through them. Most of the students in this group have now
graduated from the University and are doing great things. Most of them also still reach out every now and then
to say hi and make sure the trip is still happening and to ask where we are going and if this new group will be as
awesome as their group was. We learned we could handle more and we immediately began planning to grow.
We added additional student spots and have been holding at 20 for the last three years. We have found that
number to be a sweet spot for breaking out into small groups and having enough folks to rotate around so that
no one feels stuck. Additionally, larger groups complicate the community partnership volunteer experience and
limit the locations that can work with us easily.
Aside from all the logistical work of planning the trip down to the minutest detail, the magic happens while we
travel. In the past four years, we have traveled to San Francisco twice, Las Vegas, and Washington D.C. For me,
