Georgia Updates
University of Georgia
Housing Against Hunger
The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia recognized
winners in several different categories at its annual
Empty Bowl Luncheon at the Classic Center Feb. 27.
University Housing at UGA received the award most
pounds per person at the university. Overall, the Hunger
Bowl campaign saw 95 teams collect 485,000 lbs.
of food, which is equal to 400,000 meals for hungry
community members.
Innovation motivation
Because of student feedback, University Housing
at UGA recently remodeled study lounges in four of
its buildings to foster innovation and group activity.
Traditional tables and chairs were replaced with
moveable soft seating and powered work stations.

We added flexible seating, as well as whiteboards and
slimmed-down desktop computers to accommodate
the growing need for spaces where students can gather
to complete group classwork. Buildings with the new
innovation spaces include Building 1516, Creswell Hall,
Oglethorpe House, Rooker Hall and Rutherford Hall.
Composting initiative
University Housing's newest sustainability initiative
involves collecting compostable materials from the
residence halls. Ten out of 22 halls now have a compost
bin, into which residents may place food scraps,
which are then collected and converted at UGA's
Bioconversion Center. From there, the compost is used
all over campus, including at the UGArden, a teaching
farm that grows food for hungry community members.
