Don't Waste a Crisis:

IMPROVE YOUR EFFECTIVENESS
WITH THE AFTER ACTION REVIEW
Aaron Rodgers, Spalding University
Addressing our pandemic unravels two
paths. One represents a roadblock. The
crisis consumes us and we become
victim to our circumstances. A differing
path designates a road sign. A road
sign gives perspective and influence to
items within our control. It points us to
opportunity and asks, "What does this
make possible"? As a senior housing
officer, I implore you to choose the
second option.
How do we do unearth the opportunity
hiding behind a crisis? While many
strategies exist, an After Action Review
provides application immediately.
Developed by the United States military,
I first learned about the AAR in Michael
Hyatt's Lead to Win podcast. Here's how
it goes:

1.

WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST WINS?

2.

WHAT WORKED?

3.

WHAT DID NOT WORK?

4.

WHAT SHOULD BE KEPT?

5.

WHAT SHOULD BE IMPROVED?

6.

WHAT SHOULD BE STOPPED?

7.

WHAT SHOULD BE STARTED?

Starting with a win calibrates your mind
on improvement. Thinking about what
worked and did not work summarizes
your initial observations; it starts
peeling back the onion. Finally, the
K-I-S-S method (keep, improve, start,
stop; not keep it simple stupid!) goes to
the reviewed item's core fundamentals.
Taken together, it shows what is needed
for improving your effectiveness.
While not applied yet to the pandemic,
I testify to this tool's validity. In fall
2018, our team performed our first
AAR. After a 75-minute discussion, we
noticed themes emerge within our group
dynamics and nuts-and-bolts process.
As a result, we identified quick fixes
and mid and long-term solutions. We
implemented that to this year's start of
school and achieved better results and
fewer hours worked. Consequently, our
team climate strengthened. Not a bad
improvement!
Therefore, as we enter our new normal,
Spalding University's Residence Life
team holds its first AAR in midApril. Our seven questions guide the
process and we can complete it within
30 minutes. As a result, we see the
opportunity beyond the chaos. Give it a
go and discover the opportunity behind
the crisis.

What is one COVID-19 item needing an
After Action Review this week?
