SEAHO Report - Summer 2021 - 12

FEATURE ARTICLES
We chose to ask the first question about classes and meeting with an advisor because registration was coming
up soon, and students must meet with their advisor before registering for courses. We also noticed that we had
many students in the community on academic probation from the previous semester and wanted to check in on
how this semester was going for them.
We asked the second question about campus resources because we knew our students who returned home in the
fall semester didn't have access to many campus resources, such as the recreation center and other offices that
had not reopened yet. We also knew from our campus partners that residents weren't engaging in the virtual
programming they provided. We used this question to allow RAs to provide more information about on-campus
resources to residents who were struggling to identify or utilize them.
The third question around program attendance was designed to see if and where the residents were going to
programs. We wanted to know if they were primarily relying on the programs in the hall or going elsewhere to
attend programs from our campus partners. We wanted to help gather information on residents' interests for
RAs to better plan programs in the future.
The fourth question that asked about community was to see if our residents had a community or group of
friends, either within or outside of the hall community. We wanted to see if residents felt part of the UNCW
community or their individual communities within UNCW. We had previously heard students mentioning their
desire to transfer or withdraw from the university in the future. This information could help us better connect
our residents within the halls to each other or other communities on campus.
The fifth question around relationships with roommates and floormates was designed to help us identify reasons
behind a current trend of roommate conflicts happening within the community. We wanted to figure out how
relationships had changed over the past semester after roommates had been separated due to limiting the
occupancy of the spaces and whether or not those residents who returned felt they were still a part of the Pelican
Hall community.
Findings
How are classes going? Have you met with your advisor recently?
" Good. I have [met with an advisor], and we talked about the classes I was taking as well as my future classes. "
Most students reported doing " good " or " well " in their classes. Several of them expressed that this semester
and course load has been more challenging than they have expected. Several of those who expressed difficulties
explained that they came from math or chemistry courses.
While most students reported doing well in their classes, many have not met with their advisors yet. Those
who have met with their advisors are considering changing their majors. Students have also expressed utilizing
tutoring services for their more difficult classes. Residents that mentioned online courses said that they still did
not prefer them but have adjusted and are doing well in their classes.
What campus resources have you utilized or are familiar with?
The most common resources mentioned in the responses include the writing center, library, tutoring or SI
(supplemental instruction) sessions, and the Rec Center. Other notably mentioned resources include the Student
Health Center, Wavelink (UNCW's student engagement online platform), Academic Advising, Peer Mentors, and
TAC (Technology Assistance Center). Interestingly, students who mentioned struggling the most in their classes
utilized peer mentoring to help them get back on track from academic probation.
Have you attended any programs, either in Pelican or elsewhere on campus recently? What programs or events?
" I have attended one of my RA's programs at the beginning of the year, other than that, I had been planning on attending
more had I not had to stay home. "
Of the residents who responded to this question, most have not attended programs in the hall or elsewhere on
campus. The residents who attended programs mostly attended ones their RA facilitated. While many students
have not attended campus programs, they still feel like they have an established community or social friend
group. Some respondents reported being home a lot this semester, which has limited the number of programs
they attended. Others who reported feeling comfortable attended small, local programs but were uncomfortable
