SEAHO Report - Summer 2021 - 14

FEATURE ARTICLES
Program Implementation
Our RAs were receptive and enthusiastic about this new intentional process that gave them better guidance
on not just their interactions with residents but with more structure to their program development. We saw
an increase in program attendance and residential engagement within the community. Many residents also
interacted with the bulletin boards that provided coloring pages and tips for self-care and opportunities for
residents to share their interests and create anime watch party groups. RAs also had residents join them for
group exercise classes at the gym, which residents shared was their first time utilizing the campus recreation
center. Residents also interacted with guest speakers from our counseling center, practicing guided meditation
with them virtually and sharing that resource.
Future Implications
We used these responses and the feedback from residents attending the programs to develop questions for
March that also included an assessment question around the learning goals and outcomes from February. This
information was also beneficial as professional staff in the building because we were able to get a pulse on the
community and be more intentional when we interacted with residents and with the community.
This approach is new to UNCW and was piloted within our community and was successful. This intentional
interaction approach can be utilized within other residence hall communities looking to better structure their
residential experience without developing an entire residential curriculum. We hope to continue this approach
in the fall and use the information gathered to share with other campus partners so we can better collaborate
and that they can also structure their department's programs and resources to meet the current needs of the
residents within the halls. With COVID-19 limiting our normal interactions in the halls with residents, this
opportunity to have a pulse and better understanding of our residents' needs is the most significant takeaway of
our approach.
Inclusive Presenter's Guide
SEAHO Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee - Best Practices Subcommittee
This guide serves as a resource and reference point for presenters participating in the SEAHO DEI Committee's
knowledge communities and roundtable discussions. Below, you will find an outline of suggestions and items to
consider when preparing your presentation. Our goal is to provide you with the skills and knowledge you need
to be able to cultivate an inclusive and socially just space when presenting to SEAHO members. This guide is
specifically designed for virtual presentations.
Before the session:
1. Review this guide and prepare your session with these items in mind.
2. Visual resources
a. Remember screen sharing is inaccessible for participants who are blind or visually impaired
b. Provide resources ahead of time so that individuals can review and prepare ahead of time, or
use screen readers to be able to access the materials (which might not be possible during the
presentation).
c. Ensure all resources are accessible using a text reader. Images should be accompanied by text
description. Here is an article about how to write an image description.
3. Develop clear learning outcomes or takeaways you would like participants to leave with. This will help
participants enter the space with a clearer framework and understand what to look for throughout the
presentation. At the end of the presentation, it can be helpful to briefly review the learning outcomes at
the end of your session to recap what you want participants to have gained from the session.
