Social Justice
One of the main takeaways from the large group social justice session was how it is good to be an ally but we
also need to evaluate what we are doing to be an advocate and an accomplice. We learned that every person at
an institution has a different role in creating diversity in the university setting and advocating for social justice.
This can be university policies/procedures, department practices, or even sitting on a hiring committee.
In the 3+ Deep Dive session, we broke into groups to discuss what some of our gains were from the session.
Through this session, we had a space in which we could share our experiences. First, we had a conversation
about how to navigate theses as mid-managers and how to support those on our level and below us. Then, the
conversation led to how you practice self-care while you are navigating these conversations and times of unrest.
We talked about some of our strategies to cope with these situations and if there are negative coping strategies
we employed. Lastly, we ended with some tips for the future. It is always good to reflect on any situation that is
happening. We also agreed that it is always good to know your triggers. To end the conversation, CJ Jackson said
it best that " there is strength in vulnerability. "
Supervision
The act of supervision can be intimidating to some and come naturally to others. A great supervisor will foster
a relationship with their supervisee(s) that allows for natural dialogue and consistent feedback. When you think
about your most impactful supervisor, who comes to mind? When asked this question, it's natural to think
of a supervisor who we thought was nice, helpful, and maybe even agreed with most of what we said, but an
impactful supervisor isn't always liked by everyone. An impactful supervisor focuses on providing consistent
feedback, fostering relationships, and developing their supervisee(s).
RELI 2021 provided an insight into supervision skills and shared how we can develop skills that will make
us competent supervisors. We learned how to develop a balance between providing feedback and fostering a
relationship with our supervisee(s). It's important to learn who your " people " are, where they come from, and
the identities they hold. These key factors play into building a level of trust and create opportunities that will
allow you to impact their development and help to prepare them for the next step in their careers. The top three
rules of supervision included
1. Provide clear expectations,
2. Presume goodwill, and
3. Show empathy and consistency.
We discussed how to utilize these rules when providing accountability through feedback, managing up, and
having difficult conversations.
Crisis Management
Picture this: You're in the middle of your work day having a 1-on-1 with a staff member. Then you hear the
on-call phone ring and you are asked to respond to an emergency. Are you prepared? These crises happen fast
and escalate even quicker. Crisis management is all about preparing for the unknown, and keeping all parties
involved safe and ensuring they feel supported. This session helped us crucially think through the process of
how to respond and follow up to a crisis. While understanding that each campus has their own protocol for crisis
response and every crisis will be different, the session provided an insight into a foundation we can utilize if
coming across a critical situation that renders support and response.
During the session, our cohort was split into two on-call group levels: Community Directors and Assistant
Directors. Each group explored the facts of an ongoing crisis that changed every 5 minutes with updated
information. We were able to engage in critical thinking in determining the appropriate outcome. The biggest
takeaway from the experience is the importance of communication. With any crisis situation, communicating the
process is essential in making a decision. As viewed on the mid-level, having the on-scene information (entrylevel
and paraprofessional) is essential in creating a plan of support and keeping university partners abreast of
information and steps for immediate action. As a cohort, we discussed that it can be difficult to not be privy to all
information; however, understanding that there is support on every level is warranted and the safety and welfare
of professional staff members is a priority - in addition to the students we serve.
