The Plan
The Plan is the path of realistic action that you and your organization can take in the caring of the person. It
includes and incorporates levels of action, both individual and collective, but all addressed to the person. It is
highly personal, but should have a universally implemented practice.
In the plant metaphor, the Plan is how you decide how often you are going to water the plant; how you are going
to determine if the pot size is appropriate, and if and when you are going to move the plant to a different pot;
how you measure the health and growth of the plant; how you plan to provide and distribute fertilizer; how you
choose to prune and adorn the plant; how you manage assistance when the plant is undergoing stress or strain,
and how you plan to nurture the plant after harm has occurred; how you relate to and establish an emotional
connection to the plant; and how you either increase, manage or reduce the overall number of plants in your
home.
In real life, the Plan is how you define and articulate support, resources, and emotional energy that should and
will be provided to your person. It is how you build and sustain a relationship with your person; establish and
implement benchmarks for talent management; it is how you mentor and advise the staff in your purview; it
is how you reward and provide feedback for behavior and effort; it is how you determine success and failure in
your organization, with clearly communicated criteria and outcomes on the front end for staff to understand and
internalize; it is how you determine the best contributions to the team, and how you evaluate the overall health
and emotional safety or harm of your team.
The Plan forces you to define ambiguity, to clarify available resources and support, and determine and chart a
course for success for your organization and all of its current and prospective members. The Plan serves as an
accountability measure, a climate gauge, and an intrinsic and renewable assessment criterion. When staff do
not do well in their roles, or do not have positive experiences within an organization, we instinctively create
justification that involves the person's issues, preparedness, performance, etc. What plants teach us is that the
survival of an entity is an interdependent relationship, and it is as much about the professionalism, preparation,
and skillset of the supervisor in the same way.
Consider the following:
* The type of pot you have decided to house the plant within
* Where you want the plant to live
* Resource-providing schedule, distribution of resources amongst plants
* Relationship and physical distance from other plants
* What other actors are in the space (pets, children, other leaders/managers, students, open to public)
* Where we got the plant from and how we evaluate the quality of where plants can be acquired from (did
you buy it from a nursery or FB Marketplace- and is there a difference in quality?)
Presented another way, consider the following:
