SEAHO Report - Summer 2021 - 6

SEAHO REPORT EDITOR
Happy opening, SEAHO!!
I hope you are as excited as I am to get back to something resembling 2019's
normal for our campus operations. I don't know if you are seeing it on
your campus too, but summer students here are THRIVING off of their new
connections and the interactions they are having with their peers and our
staff, and I cannot wait to see how that continues into the fall semester.
As one fiscal year ends and another begins, we often see lots of new faces
on our campus and in our office spaces, with plenty of folx moving on from
or into new positions. I am excited to share that I have made a move of my
own, and as I've transitioned into my new role, I've been thinking a lot about
how taking on a new position is both an exciting and a humbling experience.
Depending on how long you were in your previous position, you probably
became very comfortable with many processes and may even have been a
source of support and guidance for others within your department; however,
as I have adjusted to my new surroundings, I have come to realize just how
comfortable I was, and how much I didn't know I didn't know about my
new work environment. I am realizing all the things I have taken for granted or as given or normal, that I am
consistently reflecting on my own unlearning. And all this as I am also onboarding a new supervisee, too!
As we all dive into a new year with new colleagues and eager new students, hold on to that excitement, but let
us also take time to consider how we are onboarding and welcoming our new students and colleagues. What
can we do to get ahead of the " you don't know what you don't know " learning curve for those new members of
our campus families, and how can we each connect them to resources before that humbling becomes a " check
yourself before you wreck yourself " approach?
Before I send you off to peruse the Report, I have to spotlight our feature article editor, Tiffany Willis. Tiffany
is a Residence Coordinator at Louisiana State University, and I am so excited for her to join me on the editorial
board. We had several fantastic submissions for this edition, and I am so thankful for Tiffany's assistance and
input - Y'all gave us a LOT to work with for the summer edition, and we are so excited to be able to share it with
the region!
Thank you to all of our members who submitted some very #relatablecontent (that's what the kids say, right?)!
We have ten fantastic articles in this edition, and we have thoroughly enjoyed reading through the contributions
from throughout the region. As always, please feel free to reach out to me if you have ideas for future articles, if
you aren't sure where to start but know you want to write something, or if you just want to get some feedback as
you put your thoughts to the keyboard!
I hope you all have smooth move-in experiences and feel the rush of energy and joy we are used to as students
return to your campuses. Don't forget to take time for yourself afterwards - YOU DESERVE IT!
