DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS
BRYAN BOTTS
NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY
Greetings, SEAHO! I am honored and humbled to be nominated as a candidate
for the Director of Communications position. Our association is a critical
component of my growth and success. I am grateful for this association's
investment in me and continued service in this role will allow me to continue
paying it forward to others.
I started my service as SEAHO's current Director of Communications mid-term
and continue to describe this service as unfinished business. To effectively serve
the association:
* I initiated a communications and technology resource audit;
* Facilitated the migration of SEAHO's backend technology and email services to Google's Workspace
in response to evolving technology needs and Google's adjustment in free services;
* Led the publication of a monthly newsletter with up-to-date association information;
* Expanded our communications plan and timeline;
* Reduced the number of unused communications and technology resources no longer serving our
association;
* Requested the creation of the Organizational Continuity and Digital Recordkeeping Task Force to
support the advancement of communication and technology efforts; and,
* Created instructional guides and information to support the transition of future Directors of
Communications.
Completing these tasks and position responsibilities outlined in our association's constitution are good
accomplishments; however, there is more to do. This includes re-establishing our SEAHO Report as a
critical tool for exchanging ideas and promoting best practices across our region. Organizing and cleaning
up our communications and technology resources to enable ease of use for all members, especially those
responsible for managing these within the Governing Council and Annual Conference Host Committee.
Members and elected or appointed leaders cannot continue spending significant transition time learning how
to use complicated resources, preventing us from doing more immediate work to support the association.
Communication and technology are critical for any organization. We know these two will continue to evolve
rapidly and indefinitely. To sustain an essential connection with our members; promote best practices; and
cultivate excellent networking, professional development, and involvement opportunities; I have the identified
core position goals:
* Improve our reach through integrated communications and technology. SEAHO's strategic plan
identifies the core actions necessary to be a leading provider of resources and education. One step
mentioned is launching a new or updated website. Additionally, the website should evolve into an
up-to-date landing page to connect individuals with the association through social media, news,
information, and the SEAHO Report. Ultimately, SEAHO must establish a unified voice with multiple
and equal means of communication to meet the needs of all members.
* Expand stewardship of the association's resources. SEAHO must sustain a regular communications
and technology audit to use the association's resources well. In addition to a routine audit, we must
dedicate significant time to data management. Expanded stewardship includes the sustainable
introduction, use, and sunset of SEAHO resources.
