RECOMMENDATIONS
* Evaluate your visitation policies before
implementation- Are there changes you
could easily make to improve student
compliance with the policy? Changing our
policy to meet student preferences wasn't
an option on our campus, but it might be
worth exploring depending on your process.
* Keep it short and sweet- You want the
student to pick the EO, so you have to make
it attractive to them. The video students
watch for the module is under 10 minutes
and covers the following content:
o What is a visitation-related violation
(synopsis of the policies)
o Why do visitation policies exist
(safety of residents, emergency
response considerations, respect for
other community members)
o How to follow the policies (read the
policies, ask staff for clarification on
policies, discuss with others, report
violations)
o Consequences of additional
violations (loss of visitation
privileges, housing contract
implications, etc.)
* Don't make the quiz impossible- Most
students pass on their first attempt, but
some need a few more tries. The quiz is
difficult enough that you had to have read
the policies to pass, but not so difficult that
our staff would struggle with the content.
CONCLUSION
Seeing as we met my annual EO goal after just
two months, this has been a big " win " for our
department. I'm now hoping to hit 450 EOs by
the end of the academic year (I never hope for
more policy violations, but that would be a nice
milestone). For any additional visitation-related
offenses, cases are routed directly to a conduct
officer for adjudication. Conduct officers are able
to view the previously completed EO and leverage
the student's historical understanding of the policy
to drive accountability conversations in subsequent
conduct meetings. Overall, our recidivism for
visitation violations has decreased. Less than 10
students have been found responsible for a third
visitation violation this academic year (less than 2%
of all students violating the visitation policy- these
are usually students I know on a first-name basis and
violate many other policies too). While this process
required significant administrative lift on the front
end, the reduction in formal adjudications and
overall improvement in student policy knowledge
has been well worth the investment. In time, I hope
the culture around our visitation policies will change
and students will become more respectful of our
published regulations.
