interactions, communicate more effectively with their residents, and exhibit heightened enthusiasm for their
responsibilities.
Monthly Meetings
Monthly meetings have been a critical aspect in enhancing the working relationship between all faculty and
staff that are involved with the LLCs within Luckyday. In total, there are eight individuals that attend the
scheduled monthly Luckyday meetings. In the previous years, we did not have scheduled meetings with
partners at all, other years where I have had separate scheduled meetings, with MOST one week and the
Luckyday program the next. Now, we have shifted to all partners meeting together once a month. The times
and dates of meetings are scheduled at the beginning of each semester and I send outlook calendar invites
to each attendee.
Prior to these gatherings, I create an agenda where we cover a range of topics including upcoming
programming events hosted by each partner, exchange vital information concerning students requiring
attention, address any persistent facility or maintenance issues for timely resolution, share data on
programming attendance and building-wide surveys (when accessible), and importantly, foster an
environment for socializing and an opportunity to build stronger bonds among all involved. These monthly
meetings have facilitated the growth of our relationship and communication, enabling us to enhance our
service to the Luckyday Residential College community.
Partnering for Events
Since the onset of monthly meetings, we found out there was a lot of overlap in planned programming
efforts. Instead of competing for student engagement, we now work in advance to partner on events, which
allows us to combine our budget to create more engaging and exciting events. Thanks to these efforts, we
are seeing participation numbers of around 100 students per event, which in our community, is considered
very successful.
For example, each October, the MOST LLC, RAs, and the Luckyday program traditionally organize a pumpkin
painting event. At one of our monthly meetings, we realized our mutual interest in this event, prompting us
to collaborate and transform it into a building-wide occasion. In addition to pumpkin painting, we expanded
the event to include catered food, desserts, decorations, and a photo booth. These incremental changes
have redirected our programming efforts from being overly abundant to purposeful, well-coordinated, and
ultimately successful.
Final Thoughts
As I reflect on my time at Luckyday Residential College, it is clear that collaboration and community-building
have been at the forefront of my experience. Initiatives like the Mississippi Outreach to Scholastic Talent
Living Learning Community and Luckyday Scholar Program have allowed us to expand support for our
students in meaningful ways. Through efforts to prioritize strong relationships and effective teamwork with
faculty and staff, we have been able to create an environment where students not only excel academically,
but also feel a strong sense of belonging.
Overcoming the challenges we have encountered has taught us valuable lessons, leading to improvements
in collaboration, including our collaborative Resident Assistant selection process and establishing regular
monthly meetings. Through event partnerships, we have noticed an increase in student involvement and
have created lasting memories. These efforts, while seemingly small, have positively impacted our students,
enhanced the residential experience and fostered a true sense of community within Luckyday Residential
College. As I continue this journey, I am reminded of the incredible power of collaboration and the
importance of community building for the growth and success of our students.
