SEAHO Report - Spring 2024 - 4

SEAHO PRESIDENT
Hello SEAHO Family,
Words will not adequately express my pride in this being my first
communication to you via the SEAHO Report. Having this dedicated space to
share my thoughts and feelings with you is somewhat of a full-circle moment.
Years ago, my first significant leadership moment within SEAHO was serving
on the editorial board for this publication, including three years as the SEAHO
Report Editor. A decade later, I find myself with the opportunity to once again
use this as an avenue to convey association news, updates, and thoughts.
Before getting too far with more recent things, I would like to take just a
bit of space to look back. I want to offer my gratitude and admiration to Dr.
Stephanie Carter-Atkins and Dr. Zach Blackmon for their leadership this past
year. The work and achievements of SEAHO were capped by an amazing
SEAHO 2024 conference experience in Charleston, SC (another full-circle
moment for me) at which we enjoyed the company of 825 of our colleagues
throughout the week. We enjoyed an exemplary programmatic experience,
spent time in a fantastic corporate partners exhibit space, celebrated 60 years of our
association, recognized this year's recipients of the SEAHO Awards, and refilled our individual
and collective cups through camaraderie, great meals, and making new memories. Thank
you to the SEAHO 2024 Host Committee for your great work and dedication in making the
conference a wonderful experience.
SEAHO also conducted its business in transitioning into a new year. A big part of that is
showing appreciation for our Executive Board members whose time ended. I want to thank
Jeannie Hopper, Kayla Hamilton, Jerry Adams, Dr. LaFarin Meriwether, and Dr. Kat Mortensen
for their leadership and dedication to our association through their service. As those folx
transitioned out of roles, we welcomed new leaders into the fold. Dr. Shannon Jordan, Jana
Jordan Miller, and Michael Cherry were each elected into roles, EJ Walicki transitioned from
the Treasurer-elect to the Treasurer role, and Countess Hughes graciously has agreed to join
us as our new SEAHO Sage. Additionally, we had a number of Committee Chairs and State
Representative transition off of and on to the Governing Council. This time of transition is so
incredibly important to SEAHO, and I want to ensure that we celebrate what was done as we
look forward to all this coming year will bring us.
As SEAHO looks to its 60th year of existence and operation, I will very frankly share with
you that I have high expectations for what will occur over the 12 months spanning between
our annual gatherings. The SEAHO annual conference is always the highlight of my year, yet
I strongly believe the conference experience is just one component of our organizational
identity. One of my major goals this year is to use our amazing human resources and
organizational structure to increase engagement throughout the year. I hope that through
that engagement we can make significant progress on our strategic goals as we look to wrap
up our most recent Strategic Plan. Work towards both of those goals will hopefully help drive
us towards our new Strategic Plan which we will begin conceptualizing this year.
It seems to be a cultural component of SEAHO that we are always busiest with initiatives,
engagement, and outreach around the conference and our other meetings. I don't believe
there is any need to stop or change this aspect of how we go about our business. Rather,
my hope is that we can begin some new practices that will encourage involvement and
interaction at times outside of those meetings. Since we are now several weeks out from
the conference, I have been working on encouraging our Executive Board and Governing
Council members to strike while the proverbial iron is hot and think about what they hope
to accomplish this year. Additionally, we are looking to several other initiatives in an effort to
find a way to engage our members in thinking about SEAHO as more than just a conference:
* The formation of three task forces which will examine our current practices as
an association and make recommendations on what SEAHO's next and future
steps should be in regards to their topical areas. I am thankful to Tina Belcher
