From Student Staff to Graduate Coordinator:
Transitioning from
Supervisee to Supervisor
By Glenda Herrera, Florida State University & Venus Skowronski, Florida State University
Introduction
Embarking on the journey from being a diligent student staff member to being a seasoned Graduate
Coordinator is akin to being the middle child in a family dynamic. Neither entirely new to the responsibilities
nor entirely detached from the old, this transition brings forth a unique blend of challenges and opportunities.
It's a transformative phase where one must navigate the delicate balance between being a supervisee and
stepping into the shoes of a supervisor: all while being a full time graduate student taking a full class load.
For graduate students who opt to continue their academic journey at their undergraduate institution, this
transition holds a particular significance. Suddenly, the familiar residence halls and faces of undergraduate life
become the backdrop for a new role: one that demands not just academic prowess but also leadership and
mentorship skills. This transition can be particularly stressful for a graduate student who is trying to step into
this new role.
One of the most significant shifts in this transition is supervising individuals who were once your colleagues
or even your friends. It's a testament to personal growth and professional development but also requires a
nuanced approach. How do you maintain camaraderie while asserting authority? How do you lead without
alienating those who were once your peers? How do you navigate being seen as a professional when you
were just in their position a few months ago?
Transitioning to a supervisory role isn't just about acquiring new titles: it's about finding your pathway to
excellence in this new capacity. It's about embracing the opportunity to guide and nurture others while
continuously striving for personal and team growth. Amidst this pursuit of excellence, it's crucial not to
lose sight of humility. Remembering where you came from and remaining grounded despite the newfound
authority is going to be crucial in this new role.
Backgrounds
Allow us to introduce ourselves:
Glenda Herrera:
Hi! My name is Glenda, and I was born in a small beach town in Honduras called La Ceiba. My family and
I moved to Dothan, Alabama, when I was around six and eventually ended up in Jacksonville, Florida. For
my undergraduate studies, I decided to attend Florida State University and major in Finance. During my
undergraduate studies, I was involved with an honor society, Phi Eta Sigma, and University Housing. I started
working for University Housing in March 2020. At University Housing, I worked as a Desk Assistant at the
Residential Student Experience Office. One of my primary responsibilities included having conversations
with students who had conduct holds. I had three coworkers who did similar tasks at the time, and we grew
close. In the Spring of 2022, I received the Desk Assistant of the Year Award from University Housing. Around
that time, I finished my undergraduate studies and pursued a Master of Science in Finance. In May 2023, I
graduated with a Master of Science in Finance and started a Master of Science in Higher Education. In Fall
2024, I will be entering my second and last year of my Master of Science in Higher Education degree, and I
