we have found helpful is by creating avenues for anonymous feedback to encourage honest communication.
Actively solicit input from your team on ways to improve processes, address challenges, and enhance
collaboration.
Stay Resilient
Overall, be ready to embrace challenges and setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth. It is
unrealistic to think that everything will go perfectly; however, we think that maintaining a positive attitude
throughout will make the experience 100 times better. Recognize that not every decision or initiative will yield
immediate success and setbacks are a natural part of the journey.
How To Be Seen as a Paraprofessional and Not as Student Staff
One of the biggest challenges when transitioning from Student Staff to Graduate Coordinator at your
undergraduate institution is being seen as a paraprofessional by other professional staff. Professional staff are
used to seeing you as a Student Staff, therefore, it is challenging for professional staff to see you as one of
their peers. Being seen as a paraprofessional rather than student staff involves demonstrating professionalism,
competence, and a clear boundary between your role and that of a student. During our transition from
student staff to part time professionals, we have found a few things that have made the transition easier.
Dress and Behave Professionally
As a paraprofessional, the way you present yourself significantly influences how others perceive you. Dressing
professionally involves wearing attire appropriate for your workplace and role. This might include business
casual clothing, such as dress pants or skirts with blouses or collared shirts, and closed-toe shoes. Avoid overly
casual clothing like jeans, t-shirts, or sneakers, unless otherwise specified by your workplace's dress code.
In addition to attire, professional behavior is essential. Be mindful of your body language, speech, and
interactions with others. Avoid slang or overly informal communication, especially in written correspondence.
Stay composed in challenging situations, and handle conflicts with diplomacy and tact.
Furthermore, always be prepared for meetings and interactions with colleagues, parents, students, and
superiors. We have found that carrying any necessary materials, such as a notepad, pen, or tablet, to jot down
important information has been useful. Ensure you are punctual for all appointments and events, as lateness
can create a negative impression. By consistently presenting yourself in a polished and professional manner,
you reinforce your status as a reliable and competent paraprofessional.
Establish Boundaries
We have found that establishing boundaries early on is vital to your success. Be sure to define roles and
responsibilities to maintain professionalism while preserving existing relationships. Make sure to clearly
outline expectations for each team member and ensure everyone understands their individual contributions to
the team's success. We believe that by establishing boundaries, you create clarity and reduce the likelihood of
misunderstandings or conflicts arising.
