COMMITTEE & TASK FORCE >> UPDATES Registry Committee - Subscriber Spotlight Tonja Bell, MS, CCRP M ayo Clinic Florida started using the Cardiac Registry in 2012 and the Pulmonary Registry in 2013. One of the many benefits of the Registries is a closer review of the tools we use to collect outcomes. Like many programs, we had some "home-grown" tools that were not valid or reliable. We changed our diet outcome tool from "home-grown" to "Rate Your Plate." We found this tool to be easy to use and review/discuss with the patients to recommend options for change. After collecting data in the registry for a few months, we noticed minimal change between the preand post-test scores. Upon staff discussion, we determined that our patients had either already made changes to their diet behavior prior to starting cardiac rehab or were not completing the questionnaire accurately, which was reflected in the high pre-test scores. Because of this finding, we now instruct our patients to complete the "Rate Your Plate" questionnaire based on their diet prior to their cardiac event because we are interested in learning what changes they have User Pearls of Wisdom Mark Vitcenda, MS, RCEP, FAACVPR, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics Many programs are starting to use electronic medical records for their documentation, and in some instances, for their outcomes. We're finding at UW Hospitals and Clinics that it's much easier to access our data through the registry because we don't have to ask our busy IT department to get this information from the EMR. Secondly we're finding that our registry data, especially with regards to referrals, enrollment, and completion, are much more accurate than what we're getting from the EMR. Unfortunately, most EMR systems are set up to document visits and pay the bills; they're not very good as data depositories, at least at the clinic/program level. The registry fills that purpose much better and is more accessible to our staff. already made prior to entering the program and what needs to be reinforced. using "Rate Your Plate," we have While this approach may be unique to our program and may not be comparable to other programs pre- and post-test scores based already noted a lower pre-test score, reflecting a larger change in on dietary changes since the cardiac event.  One of the many benefits of the Registries is a closer review of the tools we use to collect outcomes.
