LIAISON >> HIGHLIGHT Cardiac Rehabilitation in Heart Failure Lyn Behnke, DNP, MSN, FNPBC, CAFCI, FAAIM, CHFN and Karen Yehle, PhD, MS, RN, FAHA The American Association of Heart Failure Nurses B ecause heart failure (HF) is such a complex and multifaceted syndrome, it is vital that care teams collaborate in providing an infrastructure for patients with HF, their families, and caregivers. Instead of a multidisciplinary team, some authors are recommending an interdisciplinary model to bring together the expertise, experiences, and opportunities of caregivers so that common goals for the patient may be developed. The pooling of these specialized services brings about integrated and comprehensive interventions. (O'Daniel & Rosenstein, 2008). When one thinks of HF, one must think about cardiac rehabilitation (CR). Patients with HF have already had one of the worst days in their lives. Whatever initiated the syndrome, be it ischemia, cardio renal, cardiotoxins, Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, longstanding hypertension, infectious disease, or a combination of all, a situation was created where life dramatically changed. Heart failure is labyrinthine in etiologies and treatments. It is for this reason the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses (AAHFN) and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) have unique opportunities to collaborate in the care of the patient with HF. In the spring issue of the AAHFN newsletter, The Connection, we have focused on CR from multiple perspectives. The beginning of the newsletter focuses on the opportunities now available for HF patients. Certified Heart Failure Nurses (CHFNs); Drs. Sita Price, Karen Yehle, Nancy Albert, Kelley Pattison; and Ms. Jane Goodeve, MSN, provide insight from the nursing perspective and how patients will benefit from CR. Dr. Augustine Agocha gives advice as a Medical Director regarding CR in Advanced HF; Ms. Goodeve and A. Reid, MS, ARNP present a CR case study; B. Vostrirancky, MS, ACSM-RCEP and Dr. C. Brawner, ACSM-RCEP discuss how to integrate patients with HF into CR. AAHFN and AACVPR member Dr. Lyn Behnke provides testimony of the benefits of CR. Editorial board members and CHFNs Drs. Marjorie Webb and Jean Mau; Linda Rohyans, MSN, and Ms. Lyne Chamberlain, MSN, each provide direction for leadership, education and self-care for not only HF patients but you as caregivers as well. The Professional Liaison Committee coordinates the exchange and development of resources to benefit AACVPR members and further the organization's strategic priorities. We are happy to highlight the activities of one such partner, The American Association of Heart Failure Nurses, in this issue.
