Behavioral Aspects of Rehabilitation
Psychosocial Programming at the 2016 Annual Meeting
Maria Buckley, PhD, FAACVPR

A

s cardiac and
pulmonary
rehabilitation
professionals, we
recognize that our
patients often suffer from significant
psychological symptoms such as
depression and anxiety that can
interfere with their progress in
rehabilitation. Many times staff seek
support around how to approach
these distressed patients, which
can be more challenging without
the presence of a psychosocial
expert such as a psychologist or
social worker on site.
AACVPR recognizes the critical
need for assessment and
intervention around psychosocial
impairment during rehabilitation.
In fact, AACVPR has deemed
psychosocial management a core
clinical competency for cardiac and
pulmonary rehabilitation program
professionals. To that end,
AACVPR has provided many
evidence based psychosocial
training sessions and guidelines for
the membership over the years.
This year, the Annual Meeting has
a particularly strong psychosocial
focus, featuring nationally and
internationally renowned speakers
who will be providing exceptional
training sessions.

While an impressive body of
scientific literature exists within
cardiopulmonary rehabilitation,
there is a myriad of untapped
opportunities for behavioral
scientists to conduct research
within cardiac and pulmonary
rehabilitation settings. This year,
the Annual Meeting will host a
new behavioral research focused
breakfast session titled
"Connecting Researchers with
Clinical Sites," conducted by
Joel Hughes, PhD, FAACVPR and
Carly Goldstein, PhD.
Additionally, two outstanding
Pre-Meeting Psychosocial Core
Competency Training Workshops
will be offered by Claire Costello
Vermillion, PHD, RN, PMHCNS-BC,
Kate Traynor, RN, MS, FAACVPR
and Darshan Mehta, MD. This will
be a two-part presentation titled
"Psychosocial Core Competency
Training: Depression and Perceived
Stress Assessment and Mind Body
Practices for Self-Care in Pulmonary
and Cardiac Rehabilitation."
As we know, patients often find it
quite difficult to accept issues such
as their current health condition
and functional status. To provide
guidance on how to facilitate
patient acceptance, we are so
fortunate that Carly Goldstein,

will co-conduct "From Stuck to
Unstuck: Acceptance-Based
Metaphors to Help Patients
Appreciate Context and Change
Behavior." ACT is a widely applied
empirically-supported psychological
intervention designed to facilitate
patient acceptance and
effectively manage life challenges.
This will be the first ACT-based
training provided at an AACVPR
Annual Meeting.
Assessing for depression is
important in cardiac and pulmonary
rehabilitation programs; however,
interpreting test results can be
challenging. Diann Gaalema,
PhD, will provide clarity around
this issue with her presentation
titled "Depression Screeners in
Cardiopulmonary Rehab: What Do
They Tell Us?"
For clinicians seeking strategies
to improve risk factor reduction,
there are multiple valuable sessions
to address these issues. Therese
Shumaker, MS, RDN, LD and
Shawn E Leth, Med, CEP will
be conducting a motivational
interviewing session. Relatedly,
Therese Shumaker MS, RDN, LD
will provide a "Smoking Cessation"
session to promote behavior
change in patients needing to
