A Recap of the 2016
Affiliate Leadership Forum

"Leaders are made;
they are not born."
- VInce Lombardi

Supported, in part, by a generous contribution from Quinton/Mortara
Andrew Miller, Senior Coordinator, AACVPR Membership

V

ince Lombardi once
said, "Leaders are
made; they are not
born. They are made by
hard effort, which is the
price all of us must pay to achieve
any goal that is worthwhile." This
sentiment was fully showcased
at AACVPR's Annual Affiliate
Leadership Forum held June 2526, 2016 in Rosemont, Illinois.
Thirty-one dedicated presidents,
presidents-elect, and other
volunteer leaders representing
25 of AACVPR's State Affiliate
organizations joined a handful of
AACVPR board members to absorb
valuable leadership development
information from a host of speakers.
Board member and 2016 Annual
Meeting Speaker Ash Walker gave
a riveting motivational presentation
titled, "Wrestling with Change."
Pulling on personal and visually
entertaining past experiences,
Mr. Walker challenged the
meeting attendees to embrace
and adapt to the environmental
changes they faced in their
rehabilitation programs and Affiliate
organizations. Participants were
encouraged to view their programs
and/or affiliates as products with
characters leading the charge,
audiences ready to buy-in, and

business principles guiding the way.
The group came out of the session
reinvigorated with an understanding
that "problems" are really just
"opportunities" in disguise. Forum
attendees were treated to an
evening of Texas barbecue and
networking with a quickly
facilitated icebreaker that
challenged teams to find unique
similarities among themselves.
Sunday's activities focused on
identifying the pitfalls that come
with being a volunteer leader.
AACVPR President Adam deJong
and President-Elect Tom Draper
provided insight on unique roles and
responsibilities that volunteer boards
face, then drove the attendees to
discuss three elements of board
success in a roundtable format.
Groups discussed their personal
experiences related to developing
a strong volunteer board culture,
how they actively recruit future
organization leaders, and how to
handle conflicts of interest. Next,
Membership & Affiliate Relations
Committee Chair Dean Diersing
facilitated an open forum that
allowed participants to transition
from "bigger picture" issues to
specific, objective problems that
the leaders may have faced over
the past year. Participants openly

and willingly shared their affiliates'
challenges, such as how to recruit
members, how to develop an
effective communication plan,
how to handle volunteer turnover,
and how to facilitate strategic
planning sessions.
After a short break, attendees
were brought up to speed on
pressing industry issues and
trends by AACVPR legislative and
advocacy subject matter experts
Karen Lui and Phil Porte from GRQ
Consulting. Topics included MAC
realignment, the Million Hearts
Cardiac Rehabilitation initiative
and AACVPR's participation in this
collaborative effort, and the current
state of value-based purchasing
payment models.
This two-day event represents
a unique, targeted opportunity
for AACVPR to bring together
volunteer leaders from around the
country and arm them with both
subjective and objective information
that can be applied personally and
professionally. Attendance is by
invitation only. If you are a current
affiliate leader, or will be assuming a
volunteer leadership position in the
coming year, consider dedicating
a weekend to personal growth.
Information on the 2017 Affiliate
Leadership Forum will be provided
next spring. 
