Young Professional Perspective
Travelling on the Road to a Successful Career

F

ive years ago, I
uttered those words
on the first morning
of my first internship.
I had no idea what
path was ahead. Ending my junior
year of undergrad, my career
plans were uprooted and I was
left wondering where to turn.
To my surprise, an internship
in a local cardiopulmonary
rehabilitation program opened.
Soon after starting, I knew I
had found my passion. After
graduating, I chose to further my
education by pursuing a Master's

degree. Upon completion, I was
offered a position in the same
cardiopulmonary rehabilitation
program I had interned in just two
years prior. After 18 months in that
full-time position, I was offered the
position as program manager. Yes,
you read that right. I went from
intern to manager in four years.
At this point, you may be thinking,
"You got lucky." I wouldn't exactly
credit luck, but I do have some
insight to share to help ensure
success as you begin your career.
First, find a mentor. I can't stress
enough a mentor's importance.
My mentor helps me navigate
tough waters and provides career
advice as I plan for my future.
Second, your first job won't be

your dream job. I cleaned machines
and provided facility tours for two
years before becoming a full-time
employee. Get your foot in the
door and pay your dues. Lastly,
get involved with professional
organizations! I saved for an entire
year (on a grad school budget!)
to be able to attend an AACVPR
Annual Meeting. Professional
service will give you more than you
will ever give it!
