ACCEPTANCE AND
INCLUSION OF ALL PEOPLE
In July 1968, for the first time in a public venue, people with
intellectual disabilities were invited to play competitive
sports. And for the first time, the world witnessed the
dedication, dignity, and worth of a segment of society then
considered incapable of achievement, the majority hidden
away in institutions and shamefully neglected.
Today, the flame that was lit on Chicago's Soldier Field at the
first Special Olympics Games lights the entire world. Special
Olympics serves millions of people with intellectual disabilities
in nearly every country around the world, and has grown into
a year-round array of programs that promote fitness, mental
and physical health, public awareness, and social justice.
Special Olympics offers opportunities to play and compete all
year in a wide variety of sports, including training and fitness
programs. Sports activities culminate every year in local
Summer and Winter Games, and every two years in Regional
and World Games. Every athlete has an opportunity to qualify
and represent his or her country in the World Games because
competition is tiered to enable athletes of all capabilities to
compete.
Millions of volunteers are the backbone of Special Olympics -
coaching, officiating, training, managing events, and providing
motivational support and friendship to the athletes. From
China to the U.S., from Ghana to Singapore, from Australia to
South Africa, and from Ireland to Paraguay - in every corner of
the globe, volunteers are helping Special Olympics athletes to
live better lives.
In the desire to improve those lives even further, Special
Olympics has developed programs to work with governments
and communities to provide greater access to health care;
create athlete leadership training; engage youth and schools
with inclusive programming; and launch public education
campaigns to combat social prejudice and ignorance.
