Management Synergy & Coordination Helps Our New Oil & Gas Working Group Put All The Pieces Together S COA Senior Vice President Kei “Duke” Kato is leading our new Oil & Gas Working Group and explains to Visions how this management collective is identifying ways to use integrated corporate strength to develop synergy among business groups, and therefore coordinate our “Beyond Pipe” and “Beyond Division” initiatives for business expansion. “The Oil & Gas Working Group began under our corporate initiative in Sumitomo Corporation Headquarters in Tokyo to expand our business in oil & gas areas, especially unconventional energy-related business,” Kato said. “We have a huge business exposure and extensive business network in oil & gas through our successful business in the past. As you may know, we established a strong business model in our tubular group, where we deal with major oil companies. We have Summit Discovery Resources for our shale oil and gas interests in the Barnett Shale project, the Marcellus Shale project, and more recently, exploration in the Permian Basin where we made a successful entrance into the shale business. We also deploy our construction equipment related business in the oil & gas industry through SMS Construction and Sunstate, etc., with Komatsu equipment and other brands. Even further on the new venture side, there is some technology investment aimed at oil & gas businesses as well, and so on. Those are the small number of examples. There are so many businesses related to Oil and Gas being planned or negotiated even now at this very moment. We look to enhance the communication and synergy between each business unit.” “Sumitomo Corporation’s organization is basically vertical, meaning we separate each business unit by industry, and this actually works pretty well on each segment. However, the rapidly growing oil and gas business, especially in unconventional energy, create very interesting new opportunities for our value chain. These are areas where we can leverage our existing business value to create new value. Our corporate initiative started from this concept, and SC’s Oil & Gas Working Group in Tokyo, led by SC’s General Manager for Tubular Products Division, Mr. Nambu, was formed by calling upon many members from different business divisions to look for opportunities to create new value. I am coordinating my group with the group in SC Tokyo to expand our business opportunities even more from SCOA.
