A

lthough the first Japanese immigrants came to Argentina more than one hundred years ago,
the official agreement of Immigration became effective in 1963. Sumitomo Corporation's
presence in Argentina actually began there more than 50 years ago, in a country that has
become fertile ground for Japanese business opportunities over time.
"We opened our Argentina office in 1954," said SC
Argentina President Mr. Masashi Iwatani. "A long
history and a wealth of experience in this market are
a big part of our business advantage."
Iwatani not only sees the foundations of business
there as solid, he finds the business potential in
Argentina attractive, and sees unlimited possibilities
in the Argentine market.
"Argentina is one of the richest countries in terms
of natural resources, such as agricultural, mining
products and energy; petroleum; natural gas; and
shale oil/gas," Iwatani said. "Because the current
government, starting in December 2015, has been
working very hard to rebuild the country, we should
pay much more attention to the business fields of
agriculture, mining, energy and infrastructure. These
are areas where the government is putting the most
priority. Though Argentina is still under recovery
from a very bad economic situation inherited from
the former government, as I mentioned, the country
has huge potential in various business fields and the
