Kelsey interned at the Utica Zoo to develop skills
required of a zookeeper. In addition to gaining public
speaking and general animal husbandry experience,
Kelsey connected with other zookeepers in the greater
zookeeping community. She believes this opportunity
will give her a competitive edge in her job search.
Many SUNY programs include credit-bearing
internships as part of their degree requirements.
These programs integrate classroom instruction and
on-the-job experience, ensuring that students are job
ready. The tie between internship and employment
is strong; the National Association of Colleges and
Employers reports that the employment offer rate
for interns was 67% in 2017.

Jehron participated in a mentor-based leadership
program on his campus. He volunteered at a local
shelter that assisted families who experienced, or
were threatened, with domestic violence. Jehron
reflected about how his service broadened his
perspective. "It's nice to give back and really do
something." There is no doubt that this experience
will prove valuable as he pursues a future in medicine.
SUNY has a strong history of service-beginning
with its motto: To Learn, To Search, To Serve.
Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy
that integrates meaningful community service with
instruction and reflection. SUNY students participate
in formal service-learning programs, for which
they may earn college credit, and volunteer locally,
nationally and around the globe.
