Wilbur’s New Puppy Wilbur’s new puppy and his pet cat were best friends. Every day the puppy followed the cat around the house. When the cat said, “Meow,” the puppy wagged her long, black tail. One day, at 3 o’clock, Wilbur came home from school. He looked for the puppy under the couch, but did not find her. Finally, he saw her sitting on the porch beside the cat. “How strange,” Wilbur thought. “It almost looks as if they’re talking.” He opened the door and heard the cat say, “Meow.” The puppy looked at the cat and replied, “Meow!” Wilbur laughed because he had the only dog that spoke “cat.” 1. Who had a new puppy? 2. When did the puppy wag her tail? 3. What time did Wilbur come home? 4. Was the puppy under the couch? 5. Where did Wilbur find the puppy? 6. Hungry Plants Some plants growing in soil that is low in nutrients have a great way to get food; they eat insects! These plants have many different ways to trap insects. Some plants have parts that are like flypaper. They produce a sticky substance that acts like glue. Insects get stuck when they touch this substance. Other plants have leaves that form pitfall traps. Insects fall into the pitfall traps and then cannot climb out. A snap trap is another way plants trap insects. The most famous insect-eating plant, the Venus flytrap, uses a snap trap. The leaves of the Venus flytrap form a pocket. When an insect crawls in, the sides of the pocket “snap” closed, trapping the insect inside. Aren’t you glad these plants only eat insects? 4 5 6 Questions Questions 1. How do some plants that grow in soil with low nutrients get food? 2.
