Handy Tips!
• Autism occurs in about one of every 110 births. It is more prevalent in boys than girls. • Autism is a disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. • Autism affects people throughout the world in families of all racial, ethnic, and social backgrounds. • Autism is diagnosed primarily by observing the child’s behavior. Some behaviors are seen more consistently than others. These include poor eye contact and poor social interactions. • Autism is a “spectrum” disorder. This means the degree of impairment can be mild to severe. In addition, there are a multitude of behavioral combinations, and no “one-size-fitsall” diagnosis for autism. • Many children with autism are over-stimulated in noisy and active environments. They will cover their ears or cry when they hear certain sounds. • Combining pictures, gestures, and/ or objects helps a child with autism to communicate.

Teach children to regulate their sensory system with these colorful illustrations. Five sensory categories: Movement and Balance (vestibular); Movement and Resistance (proprioception); Tactile; Oral Motor; and Visual, Auditory, and Olfactory. Each card front has a picture activity, and each card back has directions, hints, and the therapeutic benefits of the activity. 14 illustrated teaching cards for a total of 67 (3" x 5") cards in a sturdy tin.

Directions 1. Kneel with your bottom resting on the heels of your feet. 2. Lean forward and place your forearms on the floor in front of you. 3. Place the top of your head on the floor in between your forearms.

4. Keeping your elbows shoulder width apart, interlock your fingers around the back of your head. This will give you more support during the headstand. 5. Dig your toes into the floor, lifting your heels and knees off the floor. 6. You may need a grown-up’s help for this part. Slowly bend your knees bringing your feet in towards your bottom and then straight up in the air. 7. Do not stay in this position longer than 45 seconds. Caution: Please make sure your child has clearance from his/her doctor before attempting this activity.
