"Their fruit shall be for food, and their
leaves for healing."
More than a quotable verse, those words
are a road map for wellness - one that led
Tracey Herrera to Haiti. A registered nurse
and former medical missionary, Herrera
says she doesn't take that scripture lightly.
"I was brought up to believe that food is
medicine," she said.
After years in the medical field and
many short-term trips to Haiti for medical
missions, Herrera and her husband decided
to make a move.
"In 2010, we moved there for four years
and ran a remote medical clinic," she said.
"We hosted medical teams from all over
the world, and we would go into remote
villages where people didn't have access
to healthcare." The experience was eyeopening. Herrera relays two stories that
reinforced her philosophy on nutrition.
"I saw a young teen with rickets, which
she got from her very poor diet," she said.
"She became so sick, she couldn't walk
and would scoot across the ground to get
around. Missionaries found her and began
feeding her. She's walking today because
of proper nutrition - this girl who had severely deformed legs and no muscle tone."
After Haiti sustained a catastrophic
earthquake, Herrera and her husband
