Jewelry Design builds upon success Success came quickly for brothers Jay and Bobby Gulati when they relocated their Jewelry Design retail store 10 years ago last October to La Plaza Grande Shopping Center. The jewelry retailers had developed a loyal following of Villages customers. So the move from Leesburg made perfect sense. Now the brothers are capitalizing on another market opportunity with their plan to open The Engravable(cq) Gifts & Jewelry Co. just a few doors down from their existing store near the Belk department store. Demand in the community for gift and jewelry engraving grew so quickly the brothers realized they needed more space to accommodate customers. “The opportunity just kind of presented itself when the space became available,” Jay said. “We just wanted to do something that wasn’t offered here in The Villages. We believe it’s one more thing that the customer won’t have to leave town for. It was something we were already doing here, but since nobody else was doing this we thought we would expand and turn it into its own entity.” If all goes according to plan, Jay said, the new store could open perhaps by Valentine’s Day. The store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 1040 Bichara Boulevard. Call 751-0202. Business Briefs Retail Briefs 116th anniversary One of the most popular women’s fashion retailers in The Villages is celebrating its 116th consecutive year in business this year. That longevity is significant for West Palm Beachbased Anthony’s Ladies Apparel, which operates a store in Colony Plaza Shopping Center. “We may be the oldest retailer in the state,” said Pope Anthony, the president and chief executive officer of the business and great nephew of the two great uncles who founded the firm in 1895. Four years ago this spring, Anthony opened the Colony Plaza store with strong hope that his line of fashion apparel would appeal to The Villages demographic. He was right, too. “We had an unbelievable first year,” Pope said. Just as many other retailers, the Colony Plaza store weathered a tough second year as the U.S. economy softened. “All of a sudden last year it turned around,” Pope said. Now the Colony Plaza store ranks as one of the company’s top producers, with even more growth anticipated now that The Villages is expanding its homebuilding operations south of County Road 466A. “We’re doing fabulously in The Villages,” Anthony FEBRUARY 2011 Anthony’s celebrates GO & DO said. “We’re growing every single month year-over-year. It’s a terrific store, and it’s going to get better with houses on both sides of the street. So we’re excited to be in The Villages.” The store is at 341 Colony Blvd., on the west end of Colony Plaza, one-quarter mile east of Morse Boulevard and just north of County Road 466A.
