just enjoy it. Even if I was a multimillionaire, I would
still do this job because I like the fellowship - that's
what I feel like we have here (at Belle Glade)."
Throughout his shift, Samples meets dozens, if not
hundreds, of people, and he greets them, checks them
in and radios the colors of their golf carts ahead to the
ambassador so the ambassador has a general idea of
who is who out on the course at any time.
Charlie Lottimer is a Village of Fernandina resident
and ambassador at Belle Glade, and he spends most
of his shifts out on the course. He says ambassadors
typically navigate the course backwards, which makes
it easier for them to keep an eye on players and any
errant golf balls.
Lottimer says he is asked sometimes if he ever gets
bored out on the course, but, like Samples, he says he
enjoys the social aspects of his job.
"(Some people) can look at this job as being kind
of mundane or repetitive, except there's one different
thing - people," Lottimer said. "They're all different,
and I find them all interesting. It's not one of those
things where I wake up in the morning and it's
drudgery - I enjoy it. It gets my butt up off the couch."
At the starter shacks, golf car rental or on the
course - ambassadors are there to help golfers have a
great time while out on the links in The Villages.
