After moving to Vero Beach, she attended an
art show and met a metal artist.
"I said, 'I know how to do this,' and he told
me I was hired," she said. "He paid me $5 an
hour to cut 100 butterflies, then flowers and
so on. I worked in my garage and eventually
learned to make pieces on my own."
Waters began taking her wares to shows.
"I did 35 in a year," she said. "I was hooked.
While my husband worked, this was
the money for the kids' lessons and our
vacations."
Oxygen-acetylene welding is her method for
fusing metals. The gases and
equipment might be dangerous in the hands of an unskilled
welder, but Waters wields her
torch with the ease of an artist
with a paint brush.
"It's actually called brazing," she said, joining metals
through heating and melting.
As for the sculpting part: "You
hammer or bend the metals,"
she said. "I work with three types of
metal - brass, copper and stainless - all
very thin."
Since moving to The Village of LaBelle four
years ago, Waters has made many artistic friends.
"I have play dates here," she said, showing
off her garage-turned-studio where scraps of
metal shimmer on tables and assorted welding
equipment, kilns and art supplies fill every every
nook and cranny.
