CRAIG GRIFFIN DOWNHILL LIE PROCEDURE FOR PERFECT CONTACT Downhill lies can be tricky for the simple fact that the golf club isn't going to bottom out in the same place it would bottom out on a flat lie. Here is a procedure to follow the next time you are faced with a downhill lie. 1 Set up your golf ball about 3 inches inside the front instep, which is the same ball position you would play on a flat lie. 2 Make a practice swing and notice where the club enters the turf. 3 Adjust the ball position so that the club hits the ball first, then the turf. 4 The ball position will vary depending on the grade of the slope.
