Combining his passion for the game of golf and
his love of history, Greg Stewart has amassed an
impressive collection of golf memorabilia in a sunlit
room in his Villages home.
" I used to do my wife Charlotta's history
homework, and she'd do my math, " he said when
asked what prompted his interest.
After taking up golf in the '80s he
began accumulating his treasures.
An antique cherry-red gumball
machine holds golf balls of varying
colors. There are hundreds more on shelves
and in cases and wooden boxes.
" Learning about the evolution of the golf
ball - that's what really got me, " he said.
Stewart talks about the feathery ball, one of
the first types developed, containing the sweepings
from bird coops in a leather shell stitched in three
pieces and turned inside out. Makers used wet
materials while fashioning the balls. As the
feathers expanded and the leather
simultaneously shrunk, a tight
ball took shape. The final
touch was white paint.
" I wish I had an example
to show you, " Stewart
said. " But if you can find
a feathery, they run about
$10,000. "
Stewart swipes the next ball
from a shelf - a small, black,
imperfectly shaped sphere.
