and challenges. Homesick and as worn as
the soles of her boots, Mady returned to
her husband.
" She cried at the airport and she cried
when she came home, " Dick said, laughing.
" She was so glad when it was finally over. "
It was 1976, and Dick and Mady were
now official soldiers in the U.S. Air National
Guard.
" It was a big commitment, but we
encouraged and supported each other, " she
said. " We were in it together - and that's
really the perfect example of what it takes
to be married for 50 years. "
For the next nine years, the couple
worked, traveled, competed with and
alternately leaned on each other.
" We were both selected for the All National Guard Rifle Team, and we competed
both nationally and internationally, " Dick
said. " Mady was the first woman to qualify
and be selected for the team. "
The couple used vacation time at Harley
to fulfill their annual six-week commitment
to the military. They spent free time
practicing their disciplines and improving
their skills.
" In those nine years, we never took an
actual vacation, " Mady said. " We worked
hard but we made many good memories. "
The proof now hangs in their Village
of Tall Trees home, where they've lived
since 2006. A headline reads " Rifle Range
Queen. " The timeworn newspaper clipping
shows a photo of Mady wearing a sleek
