and humorous anecdotes about the ups and downs of golf. Woven among positive
quotes and professional advice from renowned male and female golfers are tales
of Martin's golf journey, which began 65 years ago when her father introduced
her to the game. She drives home the importance of mindset, offering guidance
for overcoming common mental and emotional hurdles as players work towards
meeting their goals and deriving true joy and excitement for the game. Written from
a woman's perspective, her book will delight players of every gender and experience
level - from hackers to hotshots.

When I moved to The Villages 10 years ago, I knew this community offered unlimited opportunities to golf. I also noticed many of
the people I golfed with had taken up the sport after retirement and often failed to appreciate its benefits along with its challenges.
I concluded many people were unaware of how much their mindset affects their enjoyment of the game. In my book, I direct
most of my comments to women because as a woman, I've played so much golf with men - my father, husband, sons, and now
grandsons. They have a more competitive reaction to golf, and the women I've played with tend to believe men own this game. But
I believe if women learn the etiquette and rules, they can and will enjoy this awesome sport in their own right!
Parts of this book have been stashed in a drawer for many years, finally emerging because I joined the Writers League of The
Villages, found a writers' group, and discovered other writers took my sometimes-frivolous writing seriously. I also admit this book
is my " pandemic baby, " meaning it would not have come to fruition had I not been housebound except for outdoor exercise and
golf. Through my writers' group, I discovered many people, men and women, are curious about the psychology of golf. Most golf
lessons are based on the techniques of the golf swing; few lessons address the more important issue of attitude.

Q: W H AT D O Y O U L I K E TO DO BE SI D E S G OL F IN G?
I'm passionate about written correspondence with friends and family scattered across our country because at 80, I'm leery of social
media. Much of my career involved teaching writing: from communication skills at a technical school in Iowa to teaching business
and technical writing at a university in Ohio. I'm into exercise - Zumba, yoga, weights, and I worked for several years as a fitness
assistant at Mulberry Grove Recreation Center. I'm especially proud to be a 60-year member of a women's organization, PEO, a
group that provides scholarships for women in need.

We play golf in retirement because we have time and want to relax, so why are we frustrated? Certainly, we've reached a point of
reality that tells us we're not out there to join the pro tour, so I say, " Let it go, golfers, and learn to enjoy this game for all the right
reasons. " Golf is a unique game. You compete with yourself and are generally not responsible for others; you don't even have to
keep score unless you're in a league or playing a Skins game for money. Golf is the ultimate forgiving sport as well as a lifelong
game combining moderate outdoor exercise with time to enjoy nature's soothing effect. As in life, I suggest we remember the
good shots, forgive our miss-hits, and be grateful for an opportunity to relax surrounded by nature. My book offers insights into
how you can make playing golf a joyful and stress-free experience.
