" My mother passed away in
2003 and she gave me this (hot
rod) book way back when, " he said.
" We used to talk about cars and I said I had always wanted a
'32 roadster because it was really the start of hot-rodding. My
cousin said, 'Let's build one in memory of your mom.' So that's
what we did, and he built the '32 for me. "
Here in The Villages, Eck is a member of The Villages Vintage
Car Club, and he attends several local car shows, charity events
and cruise-ins, where he brings one or both of the cars.
Because both cars are so eye-catching, Eck says any time
he takes them out, he is guaranteed to get some reactions from
other drivers or pedestrians.
" It's thumbs-up everywhere, " Eck said, laughing. " People in
golf carts and cars blowing their horns - when I'm in either
car. I think sometimes the '32 almost gets more acclamation
than the '57. I think the color stands out so bright, and I think
I get more thumbs-up for that one. The '57 too, but the '32 just
seems to attract more people with all the chrome and color. The
Highboy Roadster is just so unique. "
Eck's own love of cars dates back to his high school years,
when he and his buddies would make fast-food runs on lunch
break in an old '44 convertible that had primer paint and no top
because Eck couldn't afford one.
" I would drive it to high school and throw a canvas over the
top of it, " he reminisced. " We'd come out at lunchtime, take the
top off, jump in and run down to McDonald's. We would eat, go
back to school and put the canvas back on. "
You could say that was the first bookend of Eck's own car
story - a story he continues to write as he takes two automotive legends out on the roads of Florida's Friendliest Hometown.
