The Villages - March 2018 - 34

Joe and Janet Kobar are model citizens.
Model A, that is.
Hailing from the Village of Glenbrook, the couple not
only owns a 1929 Ford Model A - they also dress in
clothing from the 1920s to match their classic ride.
Owning a Model A had long been on Joe's bucket list,
and after deciding the time was right, the Kobars began a
search that lasted more than a year.
Finally, they found what seemed to be the perfect
Model A for sale in Orlando in November 2016.
"We saw pictures that showed the frame-off
restoration and the body looked good, but pictures can
be deceiving," Janet said. "But when we got there, (the
previous owner) had it out of the garage in the sun and
it was like 'wow.'"
They decided this was the Model A for them.
Since most of the restoration work already was done,
the Kobars didn't need to do much to make their Model
A drivable. With the help of the Heart of Florida Model
A Restorers Club, the Kobars overhauled and rebuilt the
motor and radiator. Or, in their words, gave it a "heart
and lung transplant."
Cruising around The Villages, the Kobars catch the
attention of almost everyone they pass - and not just
because of the car they drive. Any time they take their
Model A to an event or car show, the Kobars dress in
vintage clothing from the 1920s, most of which was
provided by a friend Janet met at church.
"She said 'I have some clothes,' so I went over to her
house one day and I shopped," Janet said. "These are all
authentic 1928, '29 and '30 clothes - not the shoes,
but everything else!"

Vintage clubs
belonging to
Joe's father.

While the Model A is often synonymous with the
"gangster" image from the 1930s - note the "violin"
case in the cab - Joe also wanted to pay homage to his
father with the Model A.
"(My father) was at Penn State from 1928 to 1931,
and he was on the golf team," Joe recalled. "Those are
the same four years they made Model A's, which is ironic.
And like all of us Kobars - we hoard. We don't throw
anything away and when we were kids we used to go out
on the field and practice (with his golf clubs.)"
Joe still has his father's golf clubs, and he often
brings them to car shows and events along with a
vintage golf outfit to complete the look. It's a special and
personal way to memorialize the time he spent as a child
practicing and playing golf with his father.
In the world of classic cars, we're accustomed to
seeing the hot rods, low riders and drag racers, but it's
not every day you see a Model A cruising around town.
For the Kobars, it's all about fun, and they love the
opportunities their vintage ride provides.
If you happen to see them around The Villages, at a
car show or on the road, give them a wave or honk your
horn. You'll probably get an "awhooga" in return.

and '30 cloThes -
