"I was a jock - a quarterback and state javelin
thrower," he said. "People called me 'spear chucker.' I had
quite an arm!"
After graduating from high school, Ryerson earned a
bachelor's degree in biomedical illustration.
"One of my professors suggested I get my master's and
teach art. So I did - for 12 years."
Unable to get tenure, Ryerson left teaching and began
opening art galleries and raising money for charitable
causes. A devout Christian, much of Ryerson's art is an
expression of faith. Among his most recent works is "The
Serving," a painting Ryerson calls "spiritual."
With more than 4,000 pieces under his brush, he
continues to create art that is both difficult to explain and
impossible to overlook.
"My art infers," he said. "It suggests. For 40 years,
I thought of my art as contemporary. But I'm coming
to find out that I'm a transitionalist - or at least that's
how designers and architects have referred to me. I have
no idea what that means, but I guess my pieces lend
themselves to a multitude of interpretations."
Diners at the Brownwood restaurant Ricciardi's
Italian Table are free to sip wine and examine "Venice,"
"Florence" and "The Vineyard," three of Ryerson's
paintings.
"We spend a lot of time at Brownwood - dancing
and having a great time," he said. "I also go to shows to
get inspiration - interact with people, and with nature.
Artists can't live on mountains."

In addition to paint and
traditional canvases,
Ryerson likes to work
with other mediums,
such as wood and metal.
He uses color and texture
to create intriguing,
imaginative pieces.
